DH & I have always kept horses off our list of animals that we will have on our farm because, as DH says, they are "hay burners." However, this book has made me rethink it if we used them for farm labor.
they also provide a LOT of high quality manure for composting and adding to your garden!

but, if you get some, make sure you have enough pasture to rotate them. horses are particularly hard on pasture.
AND if you ever decide to get some might I recommend the compacts. Ponies are very strong, can do most of the work a person on a small place could ever want and take a LOT less pasture and feed. ;)

just came across Shannon Hayes book Radical Homemakers: Reclaiming Domesticity from a Consumer Culture and have to say, it sounds AMAZING.

"Imagine women with masters degrees and PhDs who choose home over career advancement. Imagine wives (and husbands) who reject the false promise of endless paid labor to tend gardens and children and friendships. In a time when Wall Street MBAs-producing nothing of value but rewarded with million-dollar bonuses and blinded by greed-have driven our country to bankruptcy and despair, Shannon Hayes' stories of women and men who choose simplicity, authenticity and community inspire hope. Outside the boxes of both conservatives and liberals, this book is radical thinking at its best. Read it and think."-John de Graaf, coauthor of Affluenza and director of Take Back Your Time

anyone read it?

You make it sound pretty good. I see you have a pretty good grip on reality too. I usually read suspense type books. Maybe I'll give your idea a try.

I am re-reading The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker. Read it years ago at the urging of a close friend, and put it off because I thought it would make me fearful, just reading it....it was very empowering, and everyone, especially women in today's world, needs to read it. The most important lesson is when NOT to be polite. And how.

The Wife just finished "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and she just downloaded her very first book to her Nook, "The Girl Who Played With Fire" :celebrate

ME? The last book book I read was The Road.
I read Mother Earth News, Back Home, Mary Janes Farm (I got that one for The Wife but she leaves it in "The Library"). and American hunter plus a few other magazines.
I just received my soft copy of "How to build Military Grade Suppressors .22 thru .50 BMG." and a new favorite cookbook, "The Zucchini Houdini".

even though i thought The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a little too... violently/sexually graphic for my tastes, i'm also currently reading The Girl Who Played With Fire. i don't really love Larsson's timing (he draws a lot of things on forever which irritates me), i do really love his plots. this one is better than the first, i think.
