ETR-That's a great idea on radishes and carrots! Do you ever have a problem pulling up young carrot sprouts when you pull the radishes?

If you go for the sun dryer let us know how it works. I was under the impression that they don't work well outside of the southwest because there is not enough dependable sunshine and it is too humid for good results.

Good luck.

Well halfway thru the year now so I looked back on my goals to see how I am doing....

~Plan to put in at least 2 maybe 3 raised beds. -In Progress
~Try Bee's tomato trellis Not yet
~Start a nice large herb bed Nope
~Launch my new biz. idea, cooking classes (much easier than doing other people's gardening!) YEP! :weee
~Learn how to make soap Found this thread while searching for soap info...
~Convert to all natural cleaning product and homemade laundry soap Yes, except never did find what I need for laundry, still use dishwasher tabs and liquid dish soap. All other cleaning is done with natural non toxic stuff
~Research Beekeeping and decide if it would be good for meon the back burner
~Ponder ways to market lip balms, soaps, scrubs and maybe candles. Perhaps my local farmers market. only made the scrubs and really enjoy them

If we buy the house we are in....Chickens & Ducks for sure!!! Did not buy the house (yet) but did get chicks & ducks...ducks got rehomed as they were just too loud and too demanding. I adore my chicks though!

So how are you all doing in your goals?

Good idea, Dace!

This is what I posted as my goals.....

Well, right now our only goals are to get a beef or two and I am hoping that with the number of hens I have now that they will be producing enough eggs to pay for themselves. :D
We had our two calves in February, although one's a dairy and the other is a dairy cross....still, both are beef!!

My poultry just started to pay for themselves, and are continuing to do so, in April. Very pleased with that!

We also added rabbits, built and planted a raised bed, enlarged and planted our garden plot, tilled up and planted a second garden plot, tilled up and planted an asparagus bed........

And now our new goal for 2009 is to move........or I should say to be moved by 2010....

I want to get me and all my animals moved

build-
run in shed for the horses
small barn for the goats for the winter
a brooder coop and then a coop/ run for when they are like half grown
at least some of the raised beds for the new garden
out up the green house
the shed for the out door wood burner
my grape arbor so they are not just growing everywhere they are not suppose to be

Put up more horse fence
clear out the dead trees from the second goat pasture that will eventually tie in with the current horse pasture so I can paddock it off in sections hopefully

I also want to get my orchard cleaned out the rest of the way so my trees my actually not only live but one day actually have fruit.

lupinfarm you sound way to much like me , though while my hands are healing from the last round of fence just in time to start moving the horse fence to it's permanent location. I am actually starting to admit I have way to much I want to do this summer maybe :hide

Ohh us too, we're called Lupin Farm and have like 3 Lupins right now LOL. I have to create a rock/alpine type environment on the outside of our picket fence because I hate mowing there and I'm putting thyme and Lupin's all throughout it.

I'm also planning on putting Lupin's in the ditches infront of the farm too :) They're so pretty and grow on the roadside here.

Well, I missed this thread, so I'll post a few goals here...

Get those #$#%& turkeys to raise some poults!
Get those #$#%& turkeys to freerange....on MY property!
Breed Mya and get a nice doeling to keep.
Build housing for a buck.
Get a buckling.....maybe.....or next year.
Build a proper root cellar.
Get a second fridge for cheese aging and storing fermented foods.
Make soap to sell to stores.
Harvest hay to defray winter hay costs....improve the quality of my pasture.
Clean the woods of junk so more of it is usable as goat browse (junk dump for previous owners....it is the last bit of the property to reclaim.)
Continue to increase gardening skills.
Get serious about buying wheat in bulk. Do it.
Fill all my canning jars by the end of the year!
Buy bulk grass-fed beef and pork.
Add more herb knowledge and usage to my wellness program.
Make dehydrated soup mixes.

Oh, gotta stop now. I get tired just looking at this list!

1. Finish the 2009 garden plan, check on seeds I dried from 2008 garden... as soon as I can find them.

2. Get all my canning supplies gathered in one spot... instead of 4.

I don't understand how some areas of our place are soooo organized, but my canning and gardening stuff is all over the place! :hu

3. Find a home for our Golden Campine roo, Sam.
All done except #3.
