What did you do in the garden today?

My garden is not so lovely to describe or see this morning. It's got some brown, some green, some promise and an area that shows as a challenge -- again. But I am thinking " you can do this!". Wishful thinking for every garden, every year, right?

Of course there is the annual paging thru of seed porn. They all look so good, you salivate and want it.....even if something you rarely eat! If I eat little of it, just buy at a market....don't waste your garden space and efforts. So hard to convince me.

It's almost time to start some of the cool weather plants for my area. That means time to arrange space for all those pots, prep garden, add fertilizers. That means clean out run ins for garden gold. Get the mulch & cardboard ready...make a plan...place containers, add dirt...move posts and CPs...ok, I'm tired and haven't even looked at the boxes of seed to use up. If I HAD to grow all I needed to eat, how would this all play out? . I'm certain I have others things to do besides the garden.

Just left southern exposure seed exchg and they placed a notice today that they have temp stopped taking orders to get those in hand packaged and sent out. Also,, stated NOT due to a shortage but, a flood of orders and limited staff.

So, if you need seed, order from somewhere soon. Appears the new gardeners are growing in numbers.

I had a container full of seed packets, thinking oh they say they're viable until 2021, plenty of time . Then that sudden realisation - oh crap its 2021!

So that is some of the plan for today. Find a few little pots and start some more seeds. I have planted a few direct in the ground but I have a higher success rate if I start them in pots (near the hose tap haha).

I have an area near the bins which gets afternoon sun. Its just a wasted spot (apart from bulbs in the spring) so I want to try some things there.

I placed my order on 1/1. So hoping it is fairly certain to be filled, b/c it will be forward in the queue of those who are not feeling the urgency.

My garden: Iced in, covered with 8" of snow. Won't see bare soil until mid April. I dumped a load of duck bedding full of great sh!+ on one of the beds last week. Will continue to add to the new beds as I take excess out of duck and chicken coops. Huge hawk took off from a look out over the duck run this morning. I hesitate to let them out... but I can't live in fear. May put up some sort of netting over their run during the day when they are out. Hawk can eat all the rodents his little belly desires. But, LEAVE MY BIRDS (aka manure factories!) ALONE!!!!!!

Indoors: When I use a sweet onion, I'm coring the root base out of the bottom instead of cutting it off flat. The first core is now sprouting some lovely tips. My aloe plant is showing signs of spider mites. May need to sacrifice the plant, and the nearby citronella, and wipe down that whole area of the living room with bleach or vinegar, or alcohol. Still have not done any kratky, or started sprouting. My efforts are slow, b/c of Dad requiring 24/7 care, and sapping a lot of my energy. But, all things said... life is good!

Been working on some garden edging very slowly, pulling a few weeds, but the bulk of the work is in watering! I almost have the next section fenced off for the ducks, but I just have to secure it in places and put a gate on before they can use that area.

Moved the ducks the new run today. They arnt sure about it yet. I hope the fences stay up in this sudden wind after a very hot and dry day. It looks a bit like its held together with toothpicks since I couldn't drive the bamboo stakes very far into the hard summer ground. Its only meant to be temporary anyway, and they are not the smartest animals to test it too much (yet).

Besides that, more weeding and watering. I picked the first nashi pear today. Much nicer than previous years and bigger too! But there is only one bunch on the tree we had wind that knocked the blossoms off and I probably didnt get the nets up quick enough. Still, something is better than nothing.

Did more in the garden today than I have in weeks!

Moved the garden bed that my neighbour made me to a winter spot. Now to fill it and figure out what to put in my winter veg bed!

I got stuck into an overgrown bush and chopped the middle out of it. Could do with some minor pruning now but I duno where I put the little hand clipper things.

I pulled out all the dead sunflowers and threw them on a little hill. They didnt really get big enough to use for feed but maybe some will grow again.

Pulled weeds as I went and trained some vines along the top of the fences. I repotted a tree I grew from a cutting and moved it out to the spot I want. Repotted some indoor plants who are recovering in a bucket under a drip just in time for the rain to roll in!

I hacked fruitlessly at some of the blackberries. Cleared about a 10 foot radius and have a nice pile to burn. It doesn't look like I did anything.

The stupid blackberries are a thorn in my side, and arms.



Also spent an hour picking cottonwood buds. I swear Mom's friend always cries when I send her some.
