sadly it says good drainage which we don't have. i like tart cherries.

I live on a sand dune. You can't get better drainage.

I've heard lovell makes a very good canning peach. They say ripe lovell peach halves hold their shape during processing. Plus you can sprout the pits to produce lovell rootstocks or grow more lovell peach trees.

Would'nt it be nice to crack open a jar of nice tree ripened peaches overwinter, add a little cottage cheese and enjoy. Unlike those tasteless rubbery things that mimic peach halves, you get from the store.

I just checked all our peach trees. There's plenty enough fruit set to remove needed branches all the way to the trunk to promote open center. It's good to allow good air flow and sun light to reach into the canopy. Except for Marge which I planted last year. But it even has 3 peaches on it.

Established peach trees need to be pruned annually because peach flowers on 1 year old wood only. So one needs to keep the vigor up in the tree to produce new wood. Which in turn represents next year's fruit set.

There's a couple schools of thought here. Some prune during bloom, yet others prune after fruit set, I'm currently in the latter camp. Since I want to ensure good fruit set and prune heavy. Instead of snipping off small branches here and there. But to me it doesn't really matter as long as there is good fruit set and the tree is pruned to promote vigorous growth of new wood. Either thought, there's still plenty of growing season left for the tree to put on new wood before it goes into dormancy.

Novamac on MM111 might just be a winner for me. I've never seen a apple with such vigor and clean leafs as this novamac.

Novamac is rated by Purdue University as very resistent to scab, fireblight, cider apple rust and rots. And it's susposed to be a good all purpose apple also. I like it how it looks and behaves so much, that I gafted another novamac scion this evening giving up a freedom that I grafted the same time as this novamac.

My fedco tree order came in just 2. But they are very nice 6 foot bare roots sweet cherry trees, 1 black tartarian, pollinating partner for bing and and utah giant. 1 lapkins, pollinating partner stella.

Packaged well, wrapped in plastic, roots in wet shredded news paper.

I have the roots soaking in a bucket of water. I'll plant these this evening.

Both were bud grafted. Based on the rings on the pruned tops. The black tartarian is starting it's 4th leaf and lapkins is starting it's 3rd leaf. So the grafts are 4 and 3 years old respectively.

By the time we got back from dropping grands off at home and then talking to our neighbors, feeding critters and fed ourselves it was to late to play in the dirt and plant trees. They won't get planted in the morning either. Because I'm going to help my neighbor take apart and load up the bottom ring from a 30 foot diameter silo. He has a cool idea of turning it into a walk in raised garden bed. I think he's also got a line on the bottom ring for a smaller diameter silo. If he does, I'll help him with that one also.
