Had a few raspberries today...one was tart, the other sweet. Hope to keep increasing these vines across the bottom of the garden until we can get significant amounts of berries for eating raw and also for making the occasional pie...maybe even raspberry jam.
We late gardeners will catch up, one day. My direct sown cukes now have THREE real leaves, tomatoes are making lots of blooms... ..best news I have for my garden!
I ate our first vine ripe tomato yesterday, a small cherry tomato. And we've been eating a few blackberries. Blueberries are growing, but if they've been blue then something's getting them before I am. And we've had large green apples off of our oldest apple tree. We picked our first two peppers, and a yellow squash yesterday.
Yesterday: A breakfast omelette with garden grown peppers and a bit of chopped zucchini and home grown eggs. For dinner -Red ripper peas - with home cured bacon!
could have eaten the omelette this AM...if you had it here.
Blueberries.....at another farm I had some bushes and excitedly watched the berries form and begin to turn. I didn't get the ripened ones but found my hens were!
I planted my three new apple trees inside the chicken area. it's fenced, about 3/4 acre and they also leave it to free range the goat pastures. Wanted to protect the trees and I rarely have a deer in that area near house/barns. (Semi dwarf trees) Then I thought about actually using that area as a tiny orchard, until I realized how well the chickens loved fruit. I can share but they don't seem to! So, no small shrub types in there.
... more swiss chard tonight (sauteed), and I threw some nasturtiums into the salad. Grasshoppers got my lettuces, and now the heat is making what's left bolt... *sigh*
