We need Mrs. Puff to weigh in on this! She is seriously living the off grid life!!! Very successfully, it seems.

We are set up for nearly totally off grid but can't do that on a permanent basis. Medical issues. And property tax bills, can't forget my pet peeve! A vehicle and income are still required.

We fall in-between closer to off grid, I guess. Have most of the knowledge, implemented as we could afford and continue questing for more tips, info, alternative ideas.

I don't want to lose this thread but I do want time to ponder it and maybe even add something like what the spectrum or continuum could look like.
I'd be very interested in seeing that :)

That's my problem. I'd love to go off grid but I'm too damn old to go out and chop wood and carry water. So I garden and can, raise my chickens and turkeys and dream about wind turbines, milk cows and fiber animals.
Another problem is that my eight acres isn't really enough to be self sufficient here in the high desert. There's not enough grazing and the land is too poor to plant hay or other animal feeding crops.

Advanced dabbler maybe?

Having a small house and a small lot limits our SS abilities, but I really think it is fun seeing how much I can do and produce in that limited space.

My whole lot is 7200 sq ft. The house covers around 1000 of that. We also have an attached garage and a shed that takes up another 700 sq ft or so. Despite the space limitation I have 5 ducks, a pond, garden beds, and now quail.

I am dabbling on growing things indoors. Mainly I am keeping stuff alive I grew outside (basil, hot peppers) but I am also trying some greens. I just planted a container full of cress. They didn't work well as sprouts but they are going nuts in the container. I will try a few more spring greens over the next month. Of course I will start outdoor garden plants early inside. I did pretty good with that last year.

Yup I hear ya big time

what I "could have done" at 20 is way different than nearing 50 now..LOL

remember one thing....be as SS as your life can allow and we have no bowing to others. accept what we can do in this stage of life.

Exactly. The more SS you are, the more choices and freedoms you have. Even if you never make it off grid, the more you can do yourself, the better off you are.

I am in year 3 of what I think is a 5 year plan. :gig

In my original idea, before coming here was/is still to plan for my future as I get older. I got this hunk of land, working the soil, make a living myself, killing wild game to eat, catching fish, gathering wild food, and doing as much as I can as well learn along the way. I have discovered a lot things about myself, as well as learned a whole bunch about mother earth.
