Super Self-Sufficient
Keeping fingers crossed for cheapo and family!!! If you are investing that retirement in your future, that is not gambling it. It is way more of a gamble having and keeping a regular job in this economy. DH has worked for the same company since 1998. When the economy fell flat, 10 years later....all he has now is his job. No more healthcare, no more uniforms, 401K, vacay/sick pay. All he has, is the job. And it is 35 miles away, 1 way.
When we met that same year,I was laid off from the best job I had ever had. I lost it all. I was only there less than 2 years, but I had great bennies.
Anyway, long story short. We met. We lived way too far apart. We shopped for a place to live for 18 months. We found this one. It was bank owned, and has issues. He took half of his 401 and made the offer to the bank with that. It was almost half what the bank was asking. It was a tense 4 weeks. The bank accepted his offer. The house and property is all paid off, in full. No mortgages.
The way I see I see it.....he invested his 401 in retirement. He will be here, when he retires. He can make the place earn him money. He has no mortgage payments when he hits 65. It took him all of his adult life to acquire his own property, with his name on it. Of all his 3 ex wives, and the last SO, they all owned the property. He had no legal say so, in any of it. And he ended up always being the one kicked to the curb. It took him to age 54, to own. In his own name.
Now, he has a future. He may not have any current 401K...but this real estate property is an actual investment. Being SS, and we are both on the same page....this is more achieveable now. As much as we would love to buy any surrounding properties, we cannot at this time. But, we can make this one turn a profit. The future is scary enough....with everything teetering on the brink.
