So, where do you go to get that special something that you crave? This question is prompted by a comment by FarmerDenise in another thread:

"Farmer Denise said "I grew up with mashed potatoes, a bratwurst and applesauce served up next to the mashed potatoes." - (ORChick) Yum, Himmel und Erde. Nice with Blutwurst too, if one can get it.

(FarmerDenise) I love Blutwurst. Fortunately I am able to get some really good not too salty Blutwurst now and then."

Maybe your special something/somewhere is around the corner, and only for locals, or perhaps it is online, and available to us all. What is your "special something", and where do you get it?

And, for FarmerDenise - There is a German butcher in Mountain View called Dittmer's - his meat is good, and he has Blutwurst (though I didn't know that when I lived there, and shopped there); a little far south for you, maybe, but if you happen to be down there ... http://www.dittmers.com/sausages.htm (For those of you wondering, Blutwurst is sausage made with blood; in England and Ireland they call it Black Pudding; in France, Boudin Noir)

Well I hate to have to say it, but there is a type of candy I pretty much grew up on between here and England :D There is a store in Port Hope that sells Flying Saucers! I love those darn things, and I like to suck the sherbert out of of the rice paper shell. Hehehe...

Yeah, I'm bad lol.

I think we need a more decriptive description of this ... it sounds like it is pretty yummy, but how can we know for sure? :D

I know lots of people that don't like them, but they're sooo tastey. The Rice paper shell melts in your mouth, and leaving the sherbert insides. I can buy these huge containers imported from England from the British Pantry in Port Hope. We buy all our yummies from back home there lol.

Now those sound like something I might enjoy. I have to admit that my knowledge of British sweets is from about 40 years ago, and somewhat out of date. But I still am very fond of Cadbury's chocolates

When I lived in London 20 years ago I used to be able to buy a wonderful dark rye sour-dough loaf flavoured with caraway seeds. Now the shop has changed hands & no longer does it & anyway I live miles out of London in the country. I really miss the taste of it. I can buy other rye loaves, even ones with caraway but they are not what I long for. I have been researching recipes that sound & look like the loaf I long for. So quite soon I am going to have a week of bread making to solve my "MUST HAVE" dilemma..........!!

So my answer to your query is; if you can't find/buy it or can't afford it, try doing it yourself.........! :D
Many times I have been told something is not stocked or made anymore & I have had to make my own version. I have to admit it gets harder as you get older & loose your physical strength but I'm not ready to give in yet. As someone who killed 3 of her roos, plucked & dressed them this week, in my quest for "tasty chicken" again I am not dead yet........! :gig :gig :gig

I absolutely love spring rolls... but only from the Sussex farmer's market around the corner from where I work... It's open every friday from May-Nov., and there is a lovely Thai lady who makes Pad Thai and Spring Rolls (with baby shrimp and spicy peppers in them)... It's my lunch every friday :)

I was just saying the other day how excited I am for the market to open up again. You really miss all the people there when you can't go for half the year :)

There is a cheese that I love: 5 Counties.
It has a strip of each English county's signature cheese.
Cheddar
Cheshire
Derby
Double Gloucester
Red Leicester
I can only afford it on occasion and when I'm ready to buy it the store is sometimes out of stock.

I like Huntsman cheese and it is getting harder to find locally because the price for this has skyrocketed. When it is offered on a cheese tray the establishments have begun the annoying habit of halving down the middle.
It is Red Leicester and Stilton alternated.
