And it is HUGE! It could hold 2-3 chickens or a home-raised turkey. Or a couple of pork shoulders. Or a big ham. Or many, many pounds of beans. Or it could render a LOT of lard or tallow. Or....or....or.....

:weee

I am so excited! I even tried to hug it...but I was wearing good work clothes and I had to restrain myself until I get into my barn clothes. Then it is getting hugged. Maybe a couple of smooches, too.

Ooooo, I will be re-reading the sections on dutch ovens in The Encyclopedia of Country Living tonight as my bedtime reading. The Ball canning book will have to wait.

Thank you, the lovely lady here who sent it to me!!!! It will be used with love and thoughts of you for many, many years. Until I can't lift it anymore. The darn thing is HEAVY!!! When I can't lift it anymore, dh will lift it for me. Many, many years of good meals to come and thoughts of you, my dear.

Cyber hugs and smooches to you, too! :hugs

YEA FOR YOU!!!!!! I love my dutch ovens. how many quarts is it? Does it have legs for cooking over a fire? Do you have a lid lifter?(necessary if cooking over a fire!) I'm glad for you! Btw, my old encyclopedia of country living didn't have a section on dutch ovens. Which version do you have?

No legs, and I have no idea what a lid lifter is!!! Maybe I can use my canning jar lifter?

I won't likely cook over an open fire....but knowing me, I will gather wood and build a fire out in the yard just to try it! :p

I did! We made an entire breakfast out of a dutch oven last year over an open fire. A lid lifter is a thingy with a hook at the end to lift the lid off the pot without getting to close to the fire and getting burned.

Congrats!! Where did you get it? I have been looking for one (finally got big frying pan, but), the shipping is outrageous due to the weight. Maybe hubby will pick one up at Bass Pro the next time he goes.

Ohhh, the things you could do with that!!

To answer all the questions:

Really? In this flat medium, you could really tell that I am excited? :p

It is a ten-quart!!! I measured it, scrubbed it, oven dried it, bacon greased it, and it is in the oven on low now, getting the grease nicely cooked in.

I have seen those lid-lifters....but where? In an antique or junk shop. I just had no clue what it was. It won't work for mine, as the lid handle is a knob, the size of a cabinet knob. I could probably use a bbq fork to lift it.

And last, but not least, I mentioned here on this forum that I was looking for an affordable one, and some one (who I haven't asked yet if I can name her here!) PM'd me that she was sending me her extra one as thanks for a kindness I'd given her. Sniff. :hugs I was so touched, and have been checking my porch for days, shaking my fist at the snow along with all of you who actually got snow (we got off easy this winter for a change) for slowing down my new pot!
