I am glad to see this topic. I am also working on weight loss and also wondered about the health effects of coffee. I usually only drink 1 cup in the mornings, occassionally I will have 2 cups or a cup in the afternoon, but it's rare and only in the winter.

I did lose 30lbs a couple of years ago and still drank my coffee every morning with half and half and sugar, so it didn't really make a difference in me.

of course "sweat tea" could also solve the deodorant problem, just fasten an "earl gray" under each arm. Maybe I've had tooo much coffee this morning ;)

I hate coffee. Never drink it...tried but failed to love the taste lol

only thing I read up on coffee is that a "big" time black coffee drinker keeps their metabolism revved all day long....therefore "to help" control weight. BUT you have to drink alot.

my Mom drinks TONS of coffee per day...sips on black coffee all day, every day, 500 days per year LOL and she never had a weight problem. She drinks maybe 1/2 glass of water per day, is 83 now AND on no pills at all. Goes faster than me still some days lol

so is it coffee or good genetics LOL and a hell of alot of luck!? I don't know lol

I love your mom, FarmerChick

And I love coffee! Plain, ol' coffee with sugar. No fancy flavored coffees, not strong coffee, just my coffee. And most days I drink an entire pot... more when it's really cold outside.

One note about a possible downside - every person that I know who has osteoporosis has been told to really limit their coffee intake. Maybe it was caffeine in general, but they all quit drinking coffee.

On the flip side is our oldest son. Vegetarian power weight lifter (isn't that odd??). He'll have no caffeine at all for days on end, then have a huge cup that has enough grounds to make two pots for me. He said the caffeine boost at that time made a difference in metabolism over sipping it non stop like I do. He said more, but I don't remember now. I didn't know there was going to be a quiz on it.

I also remember him walking around chewing coffee beans. Yeck.

A friend of mine said that coffee tastes like burnt water. She slugs down Dr. Pepper in the morning. Yeck, again.

I once mused to DH that I was concerned I was addicted to coffee. He said "so what?" I said, "Well, because I'm ADDICTED and that can't be a good thing". And he said, "I can't see the big deal. I've never heard of anyone breaking into someone's home and stealing their TV so they can get their next coffee fix so - so what if you're addicted? Have your coffee every morning and its all good". Somehow I just never thought of it like that before. The word "addiction" sounds like such a bad thing, but he's right - its not that big a deal.

Caffiene, in moderation, can help with weight loss. The problem is not the calories....but that sugar, in any form, will trigger your body to hang onto the calories and store them as fat, rather than escort them into working muscles to burn them off. So increase the cream (check your half&half label, many have lots of crap in them, heavy cream is best) and decrease the sugar as much as you can, decrease it a tiny bit at a time in your coffee so you get used to it. If you basically eliminate sugar, add lots of low-starch veggies (stabilizes blood sugar), and reduce/eliminate processed foods (especially white flour and sugar) the weight will melt off.
:woot Thanks!

And did you know they have FAT FREE half and half? :sick That's just plain stupid.
Actually, it's worse than stupid. They add carbs to make up for the fat. So it's worse for you, in reality, than real half and half.

Coffee, as mentioned, is fine. Unless you're addicted to those fancy starbucks lattes that are full of sugar and calories. Then you're going to have some issues - one of those is like a gazillion calories.

So stick with your cup or two of coffee with moderate cream and small amount of sugar (or reduce the sugar as you can, to taste).
