That is one thing I had a ton of trouble with, saurkraut.
So that nifty looking contraption worked, how cool :) I bet jalapeno saurkraut would be awesome!
That nifty looking contraption worked wonderfully. I did some research and you can buy the air lock for 95 cents at most online beer fermenting stores. So if you have a jar and a lid for 95 cents you too can have a home made picklemiester.

No smell what-so-ever escaped that jar. And in my particular situation that was an important thing.

I can't wait to do my next batch. Celery, peppers, onions, so many flavors, so little cabbage and time.

Are you just a glutton for punishment? :ep
I am all about the heat, baby! Bring it on! We go through 2 jars of pickled chili peppers a week. :somad

Didn't you say there was a store that carried the brewing stuff there in Jack-town? I need to get a few. If not, I'll just order them.

I will have to check and make sure it is still open. I was talking to DH about it and he told me he thought that store was gone. I will get the phone book out and check tomorrow and let you know.

Guess what I found in my Silkie pen yesterday afternoon.

An owl. I went to feed and water and walked thru the big chickens house, flipped the latch on the silkie door, looked up and said, what the heck is my big red hen doing sittin in the corner in this pen? Then all of a sudden as I swung the door open these really big yellow eyes opened. I did a double take and said uh oh. I eased out backwards, closed the door and ran back to the house.
I ran through the back door. DH was loading the dishwasher and I screamed, Houston, we have a problem. He just looked at me calmly and said; "what now". So off we go, him armed with a hoe and me armed with the telephone. (Yes I know, poor choice of weapon).
Have you ever tried to rake a really big owl out a pop door with a hoe? Its a real experience and you should try it sometime.
This thing bowed up, spread its wings, propped up on them, put both feet out in front and started snapping its beak at us. Finally got it out into the pen. Since the pen is covered it had no where to go. So we opened the gate and got it into the big pen thinking it would fly away. Oh NO, not this critter. It just sits there staring at us. So I call the wildlife dept and tell them to come get their owl. While I am talking to them it finally decides to go.

All the above done in pouring down rain. So now we are soaked to the bone. I still have to clean up the 3 chickens the owl killed. Not ate, but just killed. Even the heads were still on the birds.

I guess it landed on the netting just where two pieces met and fell through. There are no rips or tears anywhere. The entire pen appears secure and remains completely covered. We are still scratching our heads as to how that really big bird got into that house and run. The bird appeared to have a hurt wing. I am not sure if we did that or if it arrived on my premise in that shape. I am thinking if it had been well it would have flown away without us having to do all that.

I am sick over the my two silkie hens and one Iowa Blue mix that owl killed. I hope I have a silkie get broodie quick. I only have two Silkie hens and one rooster left.

Sorry to hear about your hens. That would scare me to death. I found my Roo sneaking in and out where the sides of the netting come together. A few strategically placed zip ties helped.

good luck,

gina

Oh, so sorry about your silkies :( Yeah, that would have creeped me out a bit too. Seeing those eyes glowing in the corner :th

Okay, I have an owl story, might give you a laugh.

A friend of my husband's was over visiting & we were all standing outside smoking. A screech owl let loose & his friend jumped about 3 feet off the ground & took off running. When we didn't follow (we were standing there dumbfounded, naturally) he stopped, looked back and with the most quavering voice I have ever heard come out of a full grown man's mouth, said "What the &*%$ was THAT?!?!"

Of course, after we picked ourselves off the grass from laughing, we explained.
