A Breadmaker too much work?

I use my bread machine only for mixing and kneading a 3 loaf batch of dough, which I then remove to rise, roll out and bake in pans in the oven. Yep, I guess it is more work :lol: But it's so, so much better and really only takes about 20 minutes of actual work time.

I was making french fries once, with a woman who was backpacking across the country and living in my backyard for the weekend (from couchsurfing website)... anyway... I told her I was going to make fries for supper, she asked why I had potatoes out... I said to make the fries from... she said 'Fries don't come from potatoes, they're in bags at the grocery store'... she honestly had NO IDEA that french fries were actually potatoes.

Sure, it takes about 3 hours of time to make a loaf of bread in a bread maker, but it's literally 5 minutes to measure out ingredients, it's not like you have to stand there and stare at the machine for the next three hours.

Mine has a 'delay bake' feature... and my coffee maker has a timer... I set both so that when I wake up there is fresh baked Honey Oat Bread, and a large pot of tea ready and waiting for me.... there's nothing better to pull you out of bed than the smells of fresh bread :)

Sometimes on rainy days I get out a bunch of different breadmachine recipes and measure all the dry ingredients into containers. That way when I'm busy, I can just chuck one in the 'bucket' add the egg/water/milk/wet stuff and walk away.

I am sorry but that lady needs a :smack

She sounds a bit lazy, but whatever....most people are aren't they? I don't get how tossing some stuff into a bread maker and turning it on is not worth the trouble when you are able to give your family a nice warm loaf of bread filled with healthy ingredients vs store bought chemical garbage....but to each his own. Did she never think of baking multiple loaves in a day ? :idunno

Perhaps the No Knead bread is more up her alley.

For the record I have 4 kids and of course between the 6 of us, we can demolish a loaf of freshly baked bread smothered in butter, in no time.....but I would never deny them that luxury in life! :drool fresh bread is one of life's great pleasures in my book!

I MUST use my breadmaker now days. :( Since being diagnosed Celiac I find that even kneading a loaf of regular bread or making rolls for my bread eating family leaves me with a very sore throat. I think I am reacting to just the small amount of flour dust that I end up inhaling. Still I do LOVE my bread machine! :) Especially for dough making.

Now that I have a stand mixer I too think that the breadmaker is too much work. For the same time investment I can make 4 loaves of great bread compared to one loaf of maybe good bread in the breadmaker. I think I got a bad one, often the corners had flour still in them or whatever. I was never really happy with it.

My stand mixer is fast and easy to clean up, and I can make buns or loaves that don't have a kneader hole in them. I can do whole multi-grains right too, my breadmaker could never handle that.

Some of that "flour in the corners" is just learning how your particular machine works. I usually put eggs and yeast in bottom, some of the flour, the melted fats next, then the rest of the flour and finally the liquid. Since learning to "layer" my ingredients I no longer have any problems with flour that does not get combined.

I agree, and I did get it worked out for the most part, but still compared to my stand mixer it's just more work for less bread.

I know , my MIL says the same thing about canning, but I like to know what my family is eating. I try and can everything possible. lol..
