A new journey into homesteading "pic heavy"

so here's some pics from a buddy's place around the corner. he just started this year. he has chickens, a garden, a few fruit trees and berries, and now rabbits and a couple quail

so we started the day with trying to get something a going on his place. I had wire rabbit cages, feeders, and water bottles but no barn. he has a barn with nothing in it. so I found a lady 45 mins away who was selling Californians, and corntux? quail. we made the drive, he bought a trio, 10 quail hens and 3 rooster. I bought 10 quail hens and 3 rooster as well. we packed the rabbits in a cage, the birds in cardboard boxes and left.

the hens got really quiet. turns out they died on the way home. probably suffocation. there goes $80. :/ stupid move I know, but hey..

so I'll be making another trip soon to buy more hens.

Bummer. I always worry when someone comes here to buy chickens, and they transport them in a cardboard box. No casualties yet, but...

Two weeks ago I had an older lady stoped and ask for hatching eggs. We exchanged phone numbers. Today she called and I had collected 3 dozen for her. She insisted on paying me, but I wouldn't have none of that. So she came back and gave me 6 pints of sweet pickle relish, that I gladly took. People look at me like I'm stupid, when I say that I don't like money. But it's true, I would rather barter than take money. Money causes to many problems but homemade pickle relish? Not so much...

well the seller didn't put the animals in boxes...I did. but we got 20 quail in the freezer!!

That's too bad about the quail. I remember driving 3 hours to get a batch of ducklings- I particularly wanted Campbells and for some reason there were none to be had any closer. We packed them in a box, but I had the box on the seat next to me, and I cracked the top open just enough to stick my hand in there so I could tell they were moving around and stuff. I could barely move my arm by the time I got home, but at least they all made it safely.

yeah I was pretty bummed out. they didn't go to waste though and they are easily replaced.

last year when he was getting into chickens I gave him a bunch of birds before he got the fence around his coop tight enough to keep his dog out.

it's a learning experience and as long as nothing goes to waste I don't see the harm


I've seen some cages I really like. I'm going to try and make some

I'm glad you have a good attitude about it, and are not devastated, but... picking up... and moving on.

Isn’t it great to have a neighbor on the same page as you! Working together y’all can get more done, to benefit both your families. It sucks about the quail, but they’ll be good eating. Get some more. They lay like crazy. You crack them in a measuring cup, 1/4 cup, pour in hot grease to fry, there’s a yolk in every bite. Your kids will love them. They make delicious pickled eggs too.
