A new journey into homesteading "pic heavy"

Well all in all id say it was a productive weekend. We rebuilt the deck on my lawn mower, mowed the 3 acres, harvested some corn, blanched and vac packed and froze, harvest the carrots and got them canned, resowed more carrots, turned the compost piles and consolidated them into one.

Now for a nice rest and hit the ground running ac calls all week.

I'd say that was a productive weekend. Your kids look so proud of those carrots they are holding. Love kids in gardens. They learn about so much more than "just" food. The ownership they have in the chores and the accomplishment is a great foundation in life.

Great weekend! Love the pic of the kids with the carrots. It's wonderful seeing children learn about gardening, harvesting their food and learning the skills. Way too many of them nowadays haven't a clue where their food really comes from, or what goes into producing it.

The carrots look great!

All those carrot greens reminds me of our neighbors out in Wyoming. The husband was gifted a bunch of lumber that he used to build a number of raised beds for his wife. She asked for 3' wide, 6' long. She got 4' square, lol. She got most of them planted, but there was 1 that were just built outside the fenced area -just beyond the length of the garden hose. It was too difficult for her to water, so she didn't plant anything in it. Husband decided that it needed to be planted so he bought carrot seeds and planted it himself by spreading the carrot seeds all over the top of the soil. The carrots grew like crazy and made a beautiful, lush green solid mass of vegetation on that raised bed. He was expecting a bumper crop of carrots - until the antelope came through one night and ate the entire bed down to bare dirt.

I try to get them out there planting with me and working in the garden when ever i can. It also seems to help them eat the vegetables if they know we grew them. Last night we had rabbit, carrots and potatoes. They had hands is growing all of it.

That's great! They are learning things that will stay with them their entire lives. Too many kids don't know where their food comes from much less how to grow it themselves...

That is wonderful My DS hates vegetables, but anything he grew or picked gets a bite or two.

Just got home from a long weekend at the lake with family. We found all of our corn blown over and our peaches decimated by birds. They had just gotten ripe.

But we went ahead and harvested most of the corn. Looks like a good haul so far and i fed the peaches to the dang chickens.

Couldn't you just trim the parts of the peaches the birds pecked on?
