I found one more job to which to apply. *sighs*

Oh! And apparently "retard" is now a hate crime word. Then arrest me, because I'm retarded. Slow. Developmentally delayed. They all mean the same damned thing, so what's the fuss. It's extremely retarded that I cannot even figure out what long term care centers are by my house. LOL
It is said that is one reason the Autism diagnoses are skyrocketing... people would rather be told their child is Autistic instead of :ep retarded.

From what I know of Autism, being simply retarded would make life MUCH easier.

Technically I believe ANY disease or disorder that causes learning and development to be delayed is "retarded". I guess butterflies like you, Abi, that learn to soar despite the problems make people think Autism is easier or even "better" (?) somehow. :hu
We've had a number of parents in our district who fight to get their kids diagnosed as on the spectrum. I'm not entirely sure of the reasoning. It probably varies from family to family. Possibly they believe their child will get more services? Better services? They won't be judged as being bad parents somehow?
Retard in music just means slow down, right? That's where mentally retarded came from. Mentally retarded is just slower at something. I'm mentally retarded when it comes to certain things. Like getting some jokes. Or math word problems. It takes me longer to figure them out! But then the term gets used as an insult and it becomes politically incorrect. oh you guys already know this stuff! :hugs <refraining from dishing out some platitude to try to make Abi feel better> Can we help somehow? Google for you? Hang in there kiddo <oh crud, I did it anyway......>

Hen, good reason actually. Since autism is hot, insurance covers more programs to help auties than most brain damage diagnoses.

But msmitten, there aren't drugs that help autism lol. Anti anxieties and anti seizure help some. Actually. So I lied. :gig

Ff... gotta love diagnostic fads. what is funny is most of it is just overdiagnosis. There is no test to distinguish autism from anything else. Purely behavioral. When that changes, it will be interesting to see how things change. Those of us without diagnoses can finally get them or be sure we are not autie. Right now it is still a childhood disorder.

If retarded is an insult, so is every other adjective under the dang sun....it IS what it is, whatever it is, that's why we have English, to 'splain things, so now we aren't supposed to use it? Sheesh!

Hi Abi!! I still haven't sent your feathers, don;t bean me with a water balloon :hide I PROMISE I will get to it!!

I agree! especially when dealing with my teenager and his friends, I get upset at the adjectives they choose to describe something they think is a bad idea. I particularly hate it when they choose "retard" or "gay" or "midget" and words that describe people as derogatory terms, especially with all the social media they participate in. My son tries to tell me that they all "do that" but I tell him it still doesn't make it acceptable. :smack That he needs to be a leader against ignorance and bigotry and stereotyping.

Perhaps as a somewhat deaf person I don't care for the labels being used as insults. And if you want to tease someone, throw a water baloon, right Abi?

*Big giant red, white and blue water baloons from the fourth come lobbing into the cozy area where we all sit and SPLASH, get you all wet.*

Yeah you gotta love the terms kids come up with to explain a bad thing. DD says things are "gay" and then there is the dumbest one yet...if something is really "cool" they call it "beast" :sick why can't they just speak English? It's not like the parents are so slow that we'll never understand their silly code words.

I'm rebooting because my speed bottomed out. And pulling this up to test it... Yeh. Pitiful. I have to reboot the modem and router too. How retarded. *giggles*

Big sis, any time you get to it :) I'm not in a hurry. I don't even have my dummies made yet.

Smitten, oh okay then ;) Full points for accuracy.

SD, I'm okay with that. If you are saying ANYTHING just to be an ass, you should think about how you are making yourself sound. But as a description, retarded means slow. That's usually how I mean it. I feel retarded that I still haven't figured out job hunting. I'm very very slow. And dur. I am definitely dur.

WannaBe... it's inclusiveness. It's vital to the socialization of children and the cohesiveness of a group to use inclusive speech. So slang, techie terms, etc, are necessary for groups to bond. It's a good thing. Really. :)

Why, yes, I did study slang because I couldn't figure it out. Why d'you ask?

Off to finish rebooting! LOL

In the HS where I work the new word for "dude" is the "N" word. It stuns me everytime I hear it.
I'm watching a show on PBS on autism right now. I missed the very beginning so I don't know what it's called. It seems pretty basic. But it gets me all fired to focus my career in Speech Language Pathology toward Autism and communication. And it is making me miss my autistic students intensely!

ETA: They're actually getting into some technical neurological stuff that is fascinating!!

Found the name of the show :Decoding Autism"

I just bravely tasted my fermenting carrots. It is so hot this week, I was not sure how it would do but it is super yummy! Not sour enough yet for me, so taste again tomorrow.
