Oh, and I finally got the vet bill from Purl's prolapse. Guess how much it was?

Only $85!!! :ep :bow I was so glad to see that! I thought it might be $200 or something. It was $30 for the farm call and $55 for the epidural and stitching. WHEW!!! The farm call fee is cheaper than their office visit. That makes no sense.

Woa - I'd be having them out to the farm all the time!

Take some pictures as she goes...you know I'm up for seeing them!

ETA - when we got the bill from our labor day calving experience we were shocked too. A 10:30 pm call to a vet 45 min away. He arrived around 11:45pm, assisted with calf chains, left around 12:30am. On a holiday. We didn't even want to think about it.

$200.

AND, the nice thing about it is I called there at 6:45 AM. He got here at 8:30 AM, and he didn't charge an emergency fee. Whew.

Glen, that's not a bad fee for that!!! And I'll definitely take pics!! I'm a picture taking fool!

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!! For two weeks I've been checking Purl round the clock and nothing. I've been sneaking home at lunch time to check on her. Today is the ONE DARN DAY that I didn't check her and what do I find when I get home?!!!!!! LAMBS!!!!

@*@#&(@#&!@()!@#@$@#%@$#^@$%&#$^& :he :rant :somad

Stupid Murphy's Law!@!!!!! I wasn't able to cut the stitch in Purl's vulva, so her vulva tore. Luckily I have 2 white ram lambs and Purl seems to be doing fine. I called the vet so they could come out and stitch her up and dipped navels and made sure they nursed.

I FEEL HORRIBLE! She was no different this morning. No discharge, udder was normal, normal appetite. The lambs are wet, so I'm guessing she had them around 3-3:30 and I got home at 4:10 and rushed to check her. UFB.

At least there are healthy lambs and she seems to be doing fine. I'll update when the vet leaves with pictures and more info.

Lambs! :D

I guess this also means that she did not re-prolapse? :D

Glad you have healthy babies! Were they extra big?

Congrats on the lambs ... even if she DID sneak them in on you with no time to prepare her.

I hope she heals up quickly.

And you certainly can't blame yourself! :) Congrats again!

Ok, so what a horrible afternoon. Well, I shouldn't say horrible because everyone is ok, but it was very stressful for me and I feel just plain awful. I wasn't able to cut the stitch before Purl lambed, so her vulva tore open pretty good (good meaning bad here). She had 2 healthy ram lambs though, which I'm so glad they're nice and healthy. The vet came out and stitched her vulva. She's got to be on penicillin for 7 days, and she got a dose of banamine tonight. He said the vulva should heal up ok, but some of the tissue might slough off.

Sad news is that I definitely cannot breed her again. I knew I shouldn't breed her again after she prolapsed, but I was fooling myself into thinking I could try it again. After this though, there's no way I'll breed her again. Since I only have limited space and money, I cannot justify keeping her. My animals have to be able to pay their way and be productive. It costs just as much to keep a good animal as it does a bad animal.

The logical side of me knows this, and knows she's "just a sheep", but the other part of me is really sad about it because when you only have 2 ewes, it's REALLY easy to get attached. Luckily I get another 2-3 months with her while she raises her boys. I'm hoping I'll be able to find a nice pet home for her, where I can make it 100% clear that she can NEVER be bred.

So, enough bad news. Here are the boys! Please excuse their gunkiness. She was bloody so they got a little bloody too.

Awww!!

I'm sorry about your ewe. :( I have two ewes and I'm pretty attached to them too.

Thanks again for your help yesterday.
