Our chickens are hiding from the wind/snow in the duck house.....you should see my girls doing the chicken dance in the snow! They look like flamingos! They will only put one foot down in the snow at a time

It was 73 and overcast today. Nice.

We are finishing our meaties Saturday - all 14- so we can get this done and over with!!

BBuff - the chicken and dumplings were yum! My parents didn't like the stronger taste, but they don't like the strong taste of farm eggs either :idunno They both grew up on small farms, so I think it has to do with that some.

FYI - the "Al6517" on BYC is NOT me. I'm only mean to people who deserve it... not sad people. :)

hehehe I'm glad you told me about it , BBuff, so I could clear that up!!

Back at ya OFG! Stay warm and have some bacon for me! :p

I feel like all I ever post anymore is weather reports  but that is all that is "exciting" at the moment. It was in the 60s when I got up this morning, it is 56 now. Tomorrow's high is 56 and guess what I"ll be doing?

The Last of the Meaties. I feel like I should pause for a moment of silence. I can't tell you how glad I will be to have that part of my life back.. you know, the part spent retarping walls at 2am when it is 20* and the wind is howling? Or the part feeling my shoe slip in what can only be meatie poo... because nothing else is quite as nasty?
When I got home from work last night I fed them the last of their chick crumbles, the last of some alfalfa/timothy pellets and some leftovers. Last time I felt guilty about them not eating... but after the stench on processing day that guilt is gone. :sick

My neighbor (90yr old Mr B) said he looooves fresh chicken lol so I will be giving him a couple of my share. He is my gardening tutor this year, so maybe I will actually have SOMETHING in my garden that grows.

Speaking of my garden - I am (hopefully) getting some Tposts for Christmas. I plan to fence off half of my garden and let the chickens in to till / fertilize for me. The other half I am planting sweet peas. I think. Maybe.

oooh ooh and one last thing. At work we are having our Christmas parties. Each team has a catered meal - meat, 2 sides, salad and rolls- and there are 22 teams in my section. I sent our staff assistant an email begging for leftovers for my chickens :) . I figure the veggies and salads will be perfect and maybe even the meat if there is any left.

I am out to make pumpkin bread, haul horse feed and move hay from the storage to my feed room.

Not really. They were in a pen about 8x12 or so. before they came I had planted oats in the run so they had fresh grass for a few days. I did a "Clampett" extension on the pen with some hardware cloth so they could get to a little bit of the yard once the oats were devoured. I also sectioned off a small corner and planted more oats - they were gone the same day I let the meats on them though
I'll plan on extending the pen so it is probably 2x bigger next time.

Once these meats are gone I am going to fill their run with bird seed oats and rye grass and see what comes up if anything :)

Im going with Australorps I believe. Although I have changed my mind several times now. But Im going to do this all in stages.
Stage 1: Day 1 to Week 4
Cockerels fed 24% broiler feed. While in the brooder
Stage 2: Week 4 to Week 6
Pullets and cockerels integrated and put outside. Fed 20% feed.
Stage 3: Week 6 to Week 12
Pullets and Cockerels free range. Fed 20% feed and some corn.
Stage 4: Week 12 to Week 16
Cockerels and pullets are separated. Pullets integrated with layer flock. Cockerels fed 20% feed and corn. No free range.
Then DEATH. Mwhahahahaha!!!

Whadya think AL?

I know you asked Al, but I will give you my 2 cents worth. :)

At stage 3 I would cut the pullets back to 15% protein. They have done multiple studies the slower the pullet is grown the more eggs she produces over her lifetime and the less reproductive problems they have.

A slow grown pullet seldom prolapses or becomes egg bound. The slow growing allows the reproductive tract longer to mature before becoming active.

Just a hint! :p
