I can sympathize being cold and in Florida! When I lived in California I got plenty cold. I think we acclimate to whatever conditions we live in. If it is normally 80, 40 feels awful cold.

The homes we lived in when we were in Southern California were not built to withstand much cold or even rain in some cases.

Thanks Gina! I hope to get some good photos of them at some point to share.

That's it exactly, SD! And wow it is cold right now!! The winds are whipping at about 10mph, with higher gusts - expected to be at 25-30mph with higher gusts on into the night. It is also raining, a little sleet mixed in so they are warning of icy bridges and such. There are a bunch of crazy people with driver licenses (and without) on the roads here so I am glad I don't live far from work.

I am sitting here worrying about my critters though. For the most part the chicken house is ok, but that eastern wall is just full of gaps. It is about 8ft or so away from the roosts, so maybe they'll be ok. I may put a tarp inside tonight when I get home, it's just a matter of figuring out how to hang it up.
I left Skye in her blanket, she doesn't do wind / rain so I am not too concerned about her being out and getting the blanket wet. I'll have to get her "warm apple water" to her when I get home, so I'll check her then.

Garden question (I'm a dimwit, I'll admit it freely) - what is the pea that grows on a vine - it is a tiny green pea that you get like in store bought pot pies etc. I know we call them English peas or Sweet peas but what are they called to buy seeds? Would they be considered "garden peas" or "snow peas"? :hide

Thanks! Now to get to ordering!

We had some sleet last night. I gave the horses their hay in the barn and carried several gallons of warm apple water to them.
The chicken house was 42* even though it was 34 outside. They all seemed happy enough. I let them out around 11 today ... didn't know if it was going to really rain or just keep "spitting" rain, but finally gave up and let them out.

Mr. Old Neighbor called to tell me some chicken news. First, he said he was standing by his field gate and his chickens were hiding under his gobbler at a small tree. All of a sudden a big hawk swooped down right there near Mr ON and tried to attack that big ol' tom turkey! Mr ON threw his cane at the hawk and yelled to scare it off. Now I am even more nervous, if it was willing to attack a grown tom turkey huddled near a man........

The second bit of news was that he found one of his "bandy" hens with 8 chicks! He was setting up a crate for them on his enclosed back porch so that he could get them out of the cold, etc. He said the chicks are not much bigger than his thumbprint lol

Weather is supposed to get colder - in the low 20s at night for the next few nights. ( I know, I know).

Reminds me of those old cartoons w/the little itty bitty hawk that was always trying to carry off Foghorn Leghorn. Hope it warms up for you! Those temps for Florida are just nuts!

My neighbor is great! When his tom turkey was younger it would get frisky and challenge / charge Mr. ON.... and it would be met with a whack of Mr. ONs cane LOL. Very docile turkey now. ;)

DD - our lows for the next few nights are in the 20s with windchills in the low teens. This time last year we had record cold (for our area ;) ) and for 13 days straight did not break the freeze.

Today it is a wet, grey, windy cold. I bought horse feed and tossed out some hay. I think I'll shut Buddy in his paddock this evening so my dad can give them water and hay tonight (he is afraid of Buddy because he kicked him a few months ago. He is still kind of a brat).

LOL Buddy would probably LOVE to live in Ohio - all kinds of mischief to be had at a certain farm in the snow! Isn't he pretty? :D

Some fun (I think) pics:
This is my vicious 110lb dog, Rio, and his boss lady Diva (I was laying in bed stretching my cell phone out as far as I could but not rolling over so I wouldn't disturb them lol ) :
