I had a rough couple of days. Thursday night my old dog Buford spent most of the night yelping a very loud yelp every 5-10 minutes. I finally figured out how to quiet him - I sat on his bed beside him with my hands on him and he calmed some, but was still yelping occasionally. He looked so bad. I just knew Friday morning I would have to have him put down. I had just taken him in on Thursday to get drops for an small , superficial ulcer on his eye, and now I was planning to put him down. I sat with him from 245am until 7am when I could call the vet.
My favorite vet (I adore all 3, but she has seen my animals more) is off on Fridays. When I called the clinic to say I thought it was time, they called her and she found someone to watch her toddler so she could come in and meet me at 830. ( I love my vets and their staff. The male vet came out front and was petting Buford scratching his ears. So that they could have exam rooms while doing tests on buford they let us sit in the lab area. The husband vet was on the phone but knelt down and was hugging and petting Buford. The techs refused to come in with her when they thought we were putting him down. And as we left, the receptionist came around to hug me and Buford both).
They couldn't find any physical reason for his yelping and he was fine from 7am on. After a lot of questions by the vet, they think he has dementia, a brain tumor or has had a stroke. They had taken him to the back and he was barking, only stopped when he saw me. During the night, yelping only stopped when he saw me. Vet said she thinks he gets confused and scared, but he still recognizes me and feels safe and comforted.
The wife vet gave Buford a prescription for Valium and I gave him one Friday afternoon - he slept and was drunk for hours. The next time I gave him only 1/4 and he did better. So now I just give him 1/4 if he is acting stressed out, otherwise I don't give him anything. If I am leaving (like tonight going to work) I will give him a 1/2 so I don't have toworry about him being alone and freaking out.
He is eating like a fiend and has been walking around wagging his tail and sniffing out chickens. I think the stress had him totally off track and now he is able to settle down enough to enjoy life again. It is going to be time probably pretty soon, but I like seeing him getting around and being happy.
Took the chicks outside today for the first time. I am afraid I haven't handled them very much so they aren't real friendly... wish I had though.
Anyway, supposed to rain later so they won't get to stay out long
Checking out Pat on the other side of the fence
The broody hen is gonna drive me nuts. I am going this afternoon and close up the chicken house to see if I can get it dark enough to candle and keep or toss some eggs. There are tons under her now.
