that is just wrong. in so many ways. Just wrong. :( ;)

Wow JM - hope you're doing better! But ... no... I still want goats. I can't imagine the pain of dislocating a heel....I deal with a 100+lb dog that thinks he is a 10lb pup, my ankles and knees have been through it all but the heel? yikes

Friend from out of town didn't come in yesterday so I spent the entire day cleaning. Yes, it really was that bad. But now you can see my kitchen counters, the floor in my living room and everything is dusted, swept and mopped. As long as they don't go in my bedroom or bathroom it should be ok - I don't think my insurance will cover them in there

She won't be here til later this morning, so I fed horses and chickens and then spent some quick time in the garden covering my potatoes. I hope I am doing that right!!
Do you cover the plant all the way? or just put compost / straw around the bottom of it? or cover it all but a couple of top leaves?

just a quick repeat - for potato folks - do I cover it all the way, just put compost around it, or cover up to the top leaves? These things are going crazy!

My friend came in around 1030-11 yesterday morning. We went to the Naval Aviation Museum... which is amazing and fascinating - the first 40-50 times you go. But her 10 yr old son had never been so we had to take him, can't have a boy his age not get to go there.
Then we got back to my house and waited for another friend to come over - we all worked as summer missionaries in South Dakota together in '92. The other friend brought 3 of her kids and the 2 little ones LOVED Rio. They were just little - 5 adn 3yrs old- but I was so proud of Rio obeying their every command. Later, after they left, their mom told me the kids made up a song about Rio and his tricks on the way home. LOL
It was after midnight when we went went to bed, I woke up at 7 to tend the animals before friend and her son woke up, then they left around 930 and I headed to my youngest nephew's baseball games.

This afternoon my almost 16yr old nephew tilled my garden for me, all but about 4 rows which I did (I love that young man!). After I took him home I went by TSC and got roped in over at the chick bins because I said something about one of them having pasty butt, so this lady started asking me questions. I bought 2 different bags of grass seed for the paddock and for my backyard, and some chick feed because they are getting huge.

See? 2 weeks old tomorrow / monday:

gotta get another box set up.. not enough room for them anymore

My favorite little red HEN ;)

Wonder if this one will stay on the path to being a Barred Rock looking chicken? With Barred Rocks, the white spot on the head is a pullet, right?

I tried to get a white background - this chick is mostly buff, but has broad white stripes on its wings

All white except on the wings

The runt.... I may keept his one even if it is a roo... I LOVE the color / markings

THey have been in my old bedroom at my parent's house while I was out of town and had company, so I guess I will try to move them to my house tonight or in the morning.

I bought blue lake bush bean seeds.... just cuz they were 2 for 1 :) .

I had 3 chicks that were a barred rock, EE cross. The 2 that looked like barred rocks turned out to be roos. They pretty much stayed looking like barred rocks. The one that was all black stayed all black, and is a pullet.

It's my understanding to cover all but the top few leaves. I always seem to lose control of that within a couple of days! All of a sudden, they're a foot tall or better. But the pictures of people getting 20 lbs of spuds from a couple plants together are awesome.

I got my potatoes planted a couple days ago, mostly in straw. They're so easy to harvest that way. And today is our day to find something bigger for our chicks, too!

And THAT is how I spent the whole day (from 9 am - 8 pm!) yesterday! :D

I was at the TSC with a couple of my hens, educating and sharing about poultry. It was National Poultry day yesterday! :p

But what's even more wrong is continuing to post more pictures of waaayyyy cute chicks when I don't have any......

yet.....

Awesome pictures of them though. Luckily for my hubby TSC was out of chicks and only had ducklings when I went there this past week. I'm over ducks at the moment but, man, if they had chicks I'd have a big ol boxed surprise for him!

I am only keeping 2, maybe 3 chicks. My friend wants 2 and Mr. Old Neighbor said he'd take the rest. He has 3-4 roos running around, no fighting no naked hens. I have 1 roo and several naked hens. I think Poppy should go to Mr ONs house for some manners training.
We actually have a huge rooster "dump site" about 5 miles north of me. When you pull in the gas station there you can find no less than 2 dozen roosters wandering the parking lot, road and little thicket of woods. Most of them are what I would call game roosters - but I have seen a few large fowl as well. When I went up to drop off my nephew the other day, we saw 2 little hens...... but they looked in great shape, despite the company they were keeping. (no, I'm not saying I will dump my roos!)

Thanks, marianne - I was thinking maybe my compost was washing off or something, these things grow FAST!!!

FF - I was glad I could answer some of the questions, others I was like "where did you even come up with the idea to ask THAT?!?!?!" lol . It was interesting to see what I have learned since last year and what I still have to learn.

Gleno - but baby goats??!!? Really??? *sigh*
Our TSC has tons of chicks. I dont think people know they even have them because they don't seem to be going very fast. The chicks are the same ones because they are getting first feathers, not downy little day olds anymore.

Well dang....do you think a three day drive to Florida is worth a dollar chick?

One of my favorite things about having farm animals is watching chicks fall alseep. I love that more than watching baby goats play....yes....that's true! Something about watching them close their eyes as they stand, sway back and forth, go down to the floor and stretch their head way out and to the side and then clunk out....just makes me go "awwwwww"
