Many years ago my older brother use to say "you buy me a case of beer and I'll buy you one" that way nothing changed hands but a shake, much easier than carrying out a trunk load of cheap Busch.
Two of my brothers-in-law used to make their own homebrewed beers. They would exchange their homemade beers at Christmas. A little bit more work than you mention, but the same idea. :D

Ahhhh, Christmas. A time of Joy, Happiness, and family. HA!!! Not around here. Its sad to think...but I really and truley DREAD it. It used to be fun...haveing all the family here, good food, music, and good company. Here lately, say in the past 2 or 3 years....its gone from "family" to Materialistic Comercialism" Because of my SS ways....I like to give gift baskets of home made things. ie: canned veggies, fruits, jams and jellies, pastas, meats...just whatever. a few years ago, I worked hard on doing crosstitch pillow cases for my sisters. Each had a beautifull Angel....with the words..Angels on your pillows and always in your dreams. In a beautifull basket, with an angel night light, and soothing candles. Sister one opened hers, and said.." Oh, thanks, pillowcases." Sister 2 said..." Since mine is the same size, I assume its the same gift, I will open it later" :rant I was soooo hurt, and angry. They all want to exchange gift cards, and booze! I dont like either one. They all still insist on comeing to our place....its central to everyone, and easy access, and we have lots of room. AND, because we butcher a hog or 2 every year, they "expect" me to supply the hams. :duc

LOL justusnak!

that was fun to read but I hear your frustration thru it all!

Hey give them the booze. If it is not appreciated, then don't give your time. Give your time to people who want and need it...like volunteer at a food pantry to help serve Thanksgiving dinner or something.

Give the sisters booze and a ham. Done deal and everyone is happy....LOL

We donate a monster hog each Christmas to a local food pantry. They go hog wild over that. My FIL and MIL makes the donation and Nicole and I go and help serve breakfast one day. We process the hog into sausage, hams, chops, etc. so they get many many meals from him.

Make the holidays easy on YOU! If they want booze and a ham---sounds simple enough..LOL

Never go against the tide. Your great efforts will be enjoyed by someone, you just gotta find the people who appreciate it!

My MIL's 2 friends make 2 quilts each per year and donate those to the shelter. They are always happy to get these items and the quality of work and handwork involved is known!

Find that good spirit...it is out there. Sometimes it just isn't in the family....haha

Great thread!

The material things that I would most appreciate for Christmas would be:

Adding on a secure run to my coop

A mill for grinding my own wheat

Help building and filling two raised veggie beds.

The more imporant things that I want are:

Financial stability - a regular pay check would be great way to minimize our over all stress!

A light hearted holiday season filled with cozy fires, good food, wonderful scents and peace. I want to get started on my home made gifts so that I can go into the season with my heart light and ready to spend quality time with my family :)

I wouldn't give them the booze, but go ahead and fix your ham.

And I'd only be giving them Christmas Cards if they treated me that rudely over a gift I put so much of my heart into.

Dace, I'm with you on the financial stability, what I want for Christmas is steady work, for my husband and for me (and everyone else!!). But for things that can be put under the tree, I have a whole list of books up on Amazon.com.....and tomato cages from Gardener's Supply. I'm very easy to please, I don't expect anything, that way, when I do get something, I'm always happy!

This year will be a lean one for presents, many will get honey - that's all we've got to give.

Actually Aly, thats a good idea. A couple other sites I've been on do gift exchanges, they're a lot of fun, especially when you keep it all secret.
