I like to go to Christmas tree stands and ask them if I can have some of the trimmings they take off the trees. It' trash to them. I use them instead of putting up a tree to get that holiday feel and nice smell. This apartment has concrete walls so I cant really hang stuff.

I like to decorate a little for each of the seasons but not much for single days.

We don't decorate very much... not because we don't really want to, but because it always seems like the season comes and goes pretty quickly and before we know it, season has come and gone. Fortunately we spend a lot of time with family and friends who all decorate a lot.

I was just talking with a friend who's family has a ton of traditions. They are pretty big sticklers for making and keeping traditions. I think they are fine, but I believe there should be moderation in all things... if the traditions start to become super structured "it must happen and must be done this way at this time and nothing else matters" then I think the spirit of the tradition starts to be lost.
I could not have put that better. I agree 100%

Some years I decorate a lot others I barely decorate at all. When DD was little, I went way out, but we also spent a lot of time making decorations.
Once she moved out of the house and I lived by myself, I didn't bother with much. Just a wreath I made myself and some greenery.
Now that I live sith SO, he likes the tree and the whole house decorated, but he doesn't help put it up or take it down, so I do what I have time/energy to do and leave it at that.
I also feel that it should be something fun, not a chore.
I often focus on the outside, since we have a miniature castle in our front yard. It is a lot of fun to decorate that. I do one side of the yard in a christian theme the other side pagan, that way we have both our religions covered  The castle works well for both.

The Christian/Pagan castle sounds kinda cool.

The christian side usually has more stuff, since we are all just so used to decorating that way. The pagan ("my") side stays pretty plain, primarily using natural decor and a 5 pointed star (pentagram) that I made and have lights strung on it.
I actually use this side of the yard for my rituals and keep it low key for the most part. I have a circle and the four directions marked and place various items in the circle sometimes.
The christian side gets the santa clauses and sometimes a nativity.

I am still in young children mode....so I do it for them, but honestly it makes me happy.

I say do what works for you! There is no right way to go about the holidays, you have to find your own comfortable spin.

Let's see. Do I decorate for Christmas. Yes, a bit.

The three youngest granddaughters just left a few minutes ago after helping me begin to decorate the house. The 4 yo put the lower ornaments on the tree and played extensively with the Rudolph toys from the TV series. The 10 yo set up one nativity, the Christmas village, and put a 4' white tree in the front window and decorated it solely in gold with white twinkling lights. The 13 yo set up the other nativity, helped 4 yo with the ornaments and then strung lights all over the bathroom and discretely placed ornaments and snowglobes here and there. They all did a great job.

I set up the "country Christmas" hearth with the fake pine trees and the rustic characters, arranged the Santa Collection (including the Scots), the Angel collection, the snow man collection, and the assorted candles, candle rings, and collectible Christmas mice. I wrapped curtain rods with tinsel garland and lights.

I have more to do, but the kids got the majority of it done. The cooking and food-related stuff still has to be stren around the kitchen and breakfast room. I have a lot of lights I want to string inside, and I have stakes with net lights that I connect all along the front of the house, wrap around shrubbery, the trunks and branches of the trees, and across the garage door, and then connect it all to a music "animator" and after dark it all comes on and plays either traditional or new kid related Christmas music and flashes the lights in time with the music. I have had it a few years, but didn't get it put up last year. So we are all looking forward to it this year.

The fascia of my house is too badly deteriorated to hold lights this year, so I may string the icicles along at the level of the tops of the windows. I always go around the top of the fence and even around the periphery of the patio cover, but I may not get that done this year.

So, yeah...I do decorate a bit.

If you have read my posts for any length of time, you may have noticed I tend to excess.....

A family we go to church with has their whole house decorated with Christmas stuff all year long... LOTS of stuff. Then, when it is holiday time (like now) they step it up a few notches and even give tours... it's crazy.
