Lovin' The Homestead
i'm religiously ambiguous so i don't really get into the whole Christmas insanity, but i have a deep love of Christmas trees. i think it's because my mother always made it a great experience for us. she bought us each a new ornament every year (sometimes something really simple, sometimes extravagant) and we all (minus my dad, who is a total Scrooge) decorated the tree together. we put up our personal ornaments and sat around talking about memories of the years we got them. it was great for us, since we had such busy lives and didn't take a lot of time to sit down and just enjoy one another.
we're 27, 24, and 20 and we still sit around my parents house and decorate the tree together. we all spend Christmas Eve there and have a deliciously lazy Christmas morning, making brunch and watching movies and playing games. from 11 pm Christmas Eve till 3 pm Christmas Day, we are the only people on the planet.
my first year living in an apartment, i was 20, my friends and i set up a non-denominational holiday tree. we were a total mix of Christians, Pagans, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Atheists, and ambiguous spiritualists. we each made decorations that represented our own ideas of Peace, Harmony, Goodwill and Charity. it is still my favorite tree ever.
i like a few choice seasonal decorations in the fall and winter, so those go up at random times throughout the seasons. my tree is nature themed (but alas, my ornaments aren't from nature) with white, silver, and blue ornaments and a hint of red. my tree topper is a silver dove. my favorite ornament is a little red glass cardinal. i love these decorations because they hint at the Christmas season but can easily just be winter themed as well.
i don't do much, but what i do i cherish. and i do it just for me. no one should make you feel bad for not wanting to do decorations. if they don't fill you heart with gladness, they are a waste of time.
