I was searching the forum for a recipe for peach ice cream and for some reason it put me on this thread...???
Anyway I thought that I would update. I had company this weekend. Non-farming company. Out of state family that I love dearly but who find all things 'farmy' to be dirty and gross... which means that I've been working my daily farm goings on in between eating out 3 meals a day. Straining milk and putting into the fridge (WITH the FOOD ), skimming cream into jars for the freezer (also WITH FOOD ), cleaning milking supplies (IN the SINK ) and sitting eggs (some with suspicious dark smears on them ) on the COUNTER - IN THE KITCHEN got a bit of side-eye going on between them.
Soooo - long story slightly shortened - it is CLEAR that having just anyone on the farm that is ABLE to help is not in any way actually HELP unless they happen to share my 'farmy' views on life and dirt and early mornings and such..... :gig
I laughed all the way through this. My sister actually said I was CRUEL for eating the chickens and pigs that I raise for meat. What? She eats chicken and pork, but it comes from a store where it isn't an animal, just meat. :thShe won't eat at my house because I might feed her a poor little animal.

I have a family member with the same attitude: What? You would kill a chicken? What, you would kill your extra roosters? Then EAT THEM? In the mean time, she was buying Ostrich meat for her kitty b/c the kitty was plagued with allergy issues. Once, she gave me the "you are a cruel woman" lecture, while sitting with a plate of BBQ chicken in front of her.

My sister was the same! Then her husband got into grilling - and whatever he says is good, is suddenly all wonderful.
All of a sudden it went from "Don't even talk to me about your poor cows, I can't even THINK about what you're going to do to them." to "Hey, do you think that you might be able to give him some great big steaks for his birthday?" and "Why don't you bring some burgers to the cookout? He'll grill them up and I'll do all the sides." :\
It's all good. I'd rather go that route. The last time family that was here this past weekend came, I went out and BOUGHT eggs, milk and meat thinking that we'd have big breakfasts and family dinners while they were here....:gig:lol:

This was printed in a SF newspaper some time ago. Enough said:

As the year progresses and options are considered, I really am factoring the wife's ability to help. Kids will most likely be too far away for regular assistance.

How is she doing @FarmerJamie ?
Thanks for asking.

Still gets tired very quickly. Still working from home, now full-time. Meds have her knocked down. Have been dragging her out when running errands. Lol. Emotionally, not sure. She says she is not up to the 12 hour trip to visit her family, but misses them terribly. If we break the trip into short stints, we start to look at week of being away from home.
