I thought it was a very midwestern thing, but Colorado is full of people originally from WI, OH, IA, etc... but we can't resist bringing a dish. Even if you don't plan on something being potluck, it will end up pot luck

Same here in the south. "Where ever 2 or more people are gathered together a pot luck supper will be served". I think that's the slogan for the Baptist Church. (Or maybe that's "an offering will be taken")
