I think it has more to do with someone else blazing the trail....the trail to that act had been cut and walked, therefore it is one more easily chosen afterwards.

I've never bought into the whole "hard-wired" theory....that people who are children of drunks will become drunks, children who are molested will become molesters, drug addicts have children who will become addicted.

Each individual life, even those influenced by others, can be lived as one sees fit and does not have to succumb to familial weaknesses. It makes for a nice excuse but is not a good reason.

Praying that you will find peace of mind and comfort as you grieve.

I would also request that perhaps unless the OP is specifically requesting our opinion on suicide running in families, we could leave that for another thread. It seems counterproductive to offering comfort to one of ours who is in grief. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The genetic components are there and VERY real, but they are not an unavoidable fate.

If you know you have a family predisposition for alcoholism, slamming tequila shots is probably not a good idea. If depression runs in your family, you will have to be more vigilant with your moods and what you put in your body that may make depression symptoms worse.

Diet plays a huge role. Too many refined starches and sugars and a lack of natural fats can make a person more depression prone. It directly effects your brain chemistry.

Having a good therapist you can talk to about situational depression is a good idea. And a therapist can help you recognize when situational depression turns in to clinical depression.

:hugs

I know way too many people, who committed suicide. It is heartwrenching when someone you feel close to does that.

You feel guilty, angry, hurt, sad, a loss. You worry that someone else will do the same, you especially worry about the kids.

Hang in there. Maybe you can get some couseling. :hugs

and just found out today that my aunt (the sister of these two) also tried to commit suicide as well years ago

in their day all of them were on drugs or drank

my dad:was an alcoholic for many many years and finally stopped drinking about 10 years ago but quickly moved into pills and tooks pills HEAVILY till the day he committed suicide. he also smoked cigs since he was 7 and had a lung removed about 10 years ago but continued to smoke. he did attempt suicide 2 years prior to this almost to the day

my uncle:almost to the day 2 years later, was a dedicated alcoholic and smoked his pot. but recently he had severe health problems. he lost the use of his feet and had to drag them around behind him. the state would not give him disability nor any health ins. he lost the use of his bladder and kidneys and still would not give him disability. we would have urine soaked clothes constantly because he didnt know he was using the bathroom. it was awful for him

i think my dad did it because of mental pain more then physical and my uncle did it more because of the physical pain.

my aunt tried it years ago with pills and when my grandma took her to the doctor the doctor said im not sure just take her home. well she took her home and she was in a coma for 3 days AT HOME.

elijahboy, as the daughter of an alcoholic, and the descendant of people with many many issues including mental illness, I simply meant, don't "own" those parameters for yourself ;) I know technically they say it runs in families and statistics show different things, but you don't have to put yourself in that slot. Don't let it define any part of who YOU are. Be healthy, and stay safe. Make sure you are coping with this in a healthy way and as much as you can, move on. Life is rough at times, and I really meant that as a compasionate statement for you in your current circumstances. I guess my point was a little vague and got misconstrued :) That's okay though...computers keyboards don't speak empathy ;)

Alcohol/and or drug use can often be a misguided attempt as self-medication. People feel there is something wrong and booze or pills, for a short while, makes them feel better. Unfortunately over time it just makes things worse and can mask the actual problem such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc...
