I think you will like the Buff Orpingtons. We have four breeds and we like them best. We use them as layers and have not had the chance to process any. They are very friendly, good layers, very pretty, good foragers and our Buff Orpington roo is a very nice guy, good to his ladies, protective and kind to the cockerels.
I'd say the drawback is they look so much alike. We have seven currently and other than the one that is a year younger, we cannot tell them apart. When one or another is molting we get to know the pattern and have temporary names for them, but other than slight differences in their combs, it is hard to even tell who is who after five minutes.
We have had several go broody.....or maybe the same one going broody several times, but I don't think so. But they are sure the ones laying a lot of eggs! And they are very nice birds to deal with. Ours are very inquisitive and unafraid.
