Phew. I also thought you meant really leaving!

I don't have any particular names, but I do find that my animals name themselves. Before one of my foals was born, I had the song "Eli's Coming, hide your heart, now" going through my head. He was Eli. My deceased Labrador (my heart dog) came to me in a dream and told me that our new dog was going to be Emma. They will name themselves somehow.

http://www.pic4ever.com/images/bg5.gif Young lady, do not EVER do that again, do you understand me? It was NOT in the least bit funny, and you are going to be in serious trouble when you get home with "Dutch". That means "IN TROUBLE" as in "In Dutch". So that's my suggestion for your goat -- Dutch. http://www.pic4ever.com/images/bg5.gif
Dutch was my grandpa's nickname.

We used to bottle raise orphaned lambs we got from farmers who didn't have time to mess with them, for meat, when i was kid. My dad used to let whatever lamb we had out the time out of the barn to run around with the dog in the yard. One day he did this before I got home from school and when the bus pulled up to our house , the dog came running to greet the bus and the lamb followed suit ... I got called little bo peep for weeeeeeeeeeeeks on the bus after that !

THIS X 3!!!!! :tongue

Scared me into a PISSI meeting! :barnie

I like Oliver but you may see something about him that is quite distinct and lends itself to a name. That's how I usually name my animals....can't count the ones my kids name!

Black Betty Lamb Baa Lamb was pretty easy to come by but her flock mate was uglier than she, so she became Ugly Betty by default. I'm sure Black Betty will have a child and the darn thing will go wild..... :D

I want to name my new ram lamb Samson, Sam, for short. Samson, he of the flowing hair, was a very virile and strong man who had a thing for the ladies! And being a hair sheep...well..... :p

Of course, that would make him Sam the Ram. His official name will be Samson Dooley (I like that old song about Dooley, sittin' up a holler, Dooley, tryin' to make a dollar..... <singing>)

Hope you find just the perfect name for your boy! :)

Awww, you guys are too sweet! Thanks for all the great name ideas. I think "Oliver Twist" is gonna stick since he is a true orphan and all. And he is too innocent right now to call him anything edible or sexual! :gig

Anyhoo, it was a really long day, long drive etc and I'm glad it is over. It was all worth it to see him trot behind my daughter as she did her outdoor chores. :love *we are not going to spoil him, we are not going to spoil him, we are NOT going to spoil him!*

I learned that a good lamb milk replacer is goat's milk...and store bought if you are in a pinch like myself.

Because it is storebought milk, I used it in a milk replacer recipe that I found online for a homemade milk replacer for lambs. (Don't worry I'll put this in the recipe section. ;) )

Homemade lamb milk replacer for bummer lambs

1 gal of milk (I used store bought goat's milk)
one can evaporated milk
1 cup of whipping cream
2 cups of buttermilk (I added a bit of kefir too)
1/8 teaspoon of baking soda to add to each bottle of milk

Pour out about 3 1/2 cups of the milk and use for something else. Add the rest of the ingredients back to the gallon jug of milk. Shake well.

Warm bottle of milk in a double boiler...I don't use the microwave, but you can if you want to. Shake it and then test it on your wrist.

During the first few days of life the lamb will drink about 3 oz. of milk per feeding. Feed about every 3 hours.

He had colostrum yesterday and today, thankfully. She sent him home with about 12 oz of sheep's milk for me to mix with his new milk replacer. I'm giving him about 1/2 of the sheep's milk and 1/2 of the milk replacer.

She had the most beautiful herd of 80% East Friesian crosses! (Small herd, but beautiful!) When I pulled up, one of them was giving birth to her FOURTH!!! lamb!!! :ep

They are not 100% pure East Friesians b/c pure East Friesians don't do so well in our climate. They cross them a little with other breeds to make them sturdy.

The drive was spectacular, it was way up in the mountains about 1 1/2 hours away. I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful drive. The traffic was on our side too.

When we got home all heck broke loose with the Saint Bernards and even the CAT! Everyone wanted to see-lick-smell the new addition. Anyway we had to shuffle everyone around and it was a mad house for a good hour, but still worth it. When I finally sat down with my "special occasion" glass of wine, the cat puked all over the kitchen floor. Thanks Scott. :/ I missed you too.

(Kitty "Scott" really did like the lamb, or was it the sweet milk that was dribbling down onto the floor?)

It is good to be back!

Now I understand what it feels like to snuggle with lambs! I GET IT! :love My old spinster (not for long ;)) sheep have been holding out on me. :rant

Oh, and btw, we are not supposed to touch his head, ever. It encourages him to head butt. If he ever shows signs of aggression I'm supposed to squirt him in the face with a water bottle. She says that works pretty good until he gets his own paddock. Then he is just for looks and breeding. Freezer camp if he can't behave. Mutton is supposed to be great as ground meat...so they said.

Ok, now to have that patiently waiting glass of wine. (Did any of you know Pino Grigio pares well with tater tots? There was NO way was I cooking tonight!! :gig)

P.S. I'm taking many photos! I'll post some soon. The durn thing has blue eyes, he has a tight white perm and is no bigger than the cat! :p

Sorry, I should have added, his blue eyes will turn dark brown as he ages. They won't stay blue. Oh well.

Hey Bee, have your sheep shed their hair yet? Dorothy my Kat, is droppin her hair like crazy and now she looks like a shaved French Poodle! She has pom poms on her hips and a ruff around her neck. So cute!

Dolly looks like a giant dirty cotton ball with legs. Poor thing, it is still a tad too cold to shave her. She is funny to look at though. :p
