So, at work there is a guy who gets samples of paper products from his suppliers. Yesterday he brought me a cookbook. He said, "I know you like cookbooks and when I saw this one I thought of you. It is weird, though, how they have a picture of chickens in a field across from a recipe for chicken or a picture of cows grazing across from a recipe of a cheesy dish." :gig Of course I grabbed it up with thanks. :celebrate

And this is definitely a great cookbook that celebrates real food. :D Along with beautiful farm pictures, there are also pictures and history about towns and sites in Vermont. Across from a corn dish recipe is a picture of actual corn growing in a field; grazing sheep across from lamb chop recipe; pig across from pork recipe. Title is Dishing Up Vermont . Copyright is 2008. The forward has a section on eating locally. I think it is a keeper. :thumbsup

I already learned about boiled cider - a syrup/sweetener made from boiling down cider - from the book. Might try that.

So, I've been very busy traveling and such. I've been wanting to try coconut water and haven't found it in any local stores. Did get one brand at the health food store 60 miles away, but have not tried it yet. So Sunday after a long day flying home from Missouri and then driving to see my nephew who would be leaving Monday, Mom and I stopped at a gas station for a drink. I was going to grab spring water when I saw, of all things, cartons of Vita Coco water. I grabbed a peach/mango flavored one and forked over a hefty $3 for it.

I love coconut and enjoy coconut milk and oil, but I don't care for the young coconut water. I had tried some from an actual young coconut I bought from Wal-Mart and broke open. I thought it may have been too "ripe" as I didn't care for the flavor, but now I'm thinking that coconut water in general doesn't agree with me. It almost has a salty tone to the taste. I'll still use what I got at the health food store with some water kefir grains, but I don't think I'll be buying a case of Vita Coco from Amazon.com like I'd planned. :/

I have never tried it. What the point of drinking the coco nut water? I thought it was a diuretic and not all that good for you?

:hu

Good thing you got to try it before ordering a bunch.

I read that is supposed to be a healthy, unprocessed/not concentrated drink. It has a good amount of Potassium, Vitamin C (added to mine), and Magnesium. It is supposed to have natural electrolytes. Seems to be the drink that is all the rage right now. :/ Whatever. Back to my kombucha. Can't wait for the new batch to finish.

Update of just STUFF:

- It is well into October, and we haven't had our first hard frost yet. I thought I saw a dusting of frost a couple weeks back, though. Still our leaves are slowly starting to show change.

- I have soggy and muddy spots all over my yard. It is the worst where water ran off poultry yards and collected between two buildings. It rained 15 out of 17 days. Tuesday was our first day without rain, and the prediction is that fair skies and warm temps will hold for a week. :)

- I have a bunch of Concord grapes I need to do up in some way or other. I may just end up doing juice if I don't come up with something that isn't too full of sugar. I've been trying to follow principle of Weston A. Price/Sally Fallon and such. I'm trying to cut way back on wheat and many other grains as well as sugar.

- Mom and I are working on a double batch of barbecue relish that is based on green tomatoes. Had two friends give us their garden leftovers. Lots of vegetables to grind for this.

- I have extra goat milk this week and really need to make it into cheese before it goes bad. :/

- Made homemade whipped cream for the first time last night. Used heavy whipping cream, dusting of sugar, and dash of vanilla. It peaked very quickly and tasted better than that tub of stuff. Couldn't believe how fast and easy it was. I used my immersion blender in a tall plastic container. Why didn't I do this before now? :love

- I have 3 quilt projects that I'm currently working on. 1) Finishing a baby quilt for my nephew's baby. I completed the quilt top over 10 years ago - all hand pieced. :ep Now I'm going to add the back and either tie quilt or simple machine quilt it before the shower on the 15th. :fl 2) I'm doing an Amish wall hanging related to a project at work. The main blocks are done. Just needs sash and frame to complete the top. 3) I started cutting out a Tumbling Blocks quilt last night for my niece's baby. Shower is on the 29th, so I really need to get cracking on it.

- This weekend I hope to take advantage of good weather to clean coops, clean garden and perhaps put down cover crop, fix flowerbeds in front of house where we pulled out bushes, and clean/organize garage. But this weekend is also my favorite fall festival that I want to attend.

- October 15 I'm going to the fall poultry swap. I need to dig deep and get rid of a lot of my birds before winter. I hope to profit at the swap as opposed to practically giving them away at auction. Though, I still may need to sell some old hens at auction - unless I butcher.

- Yesterday I lost one of the Muscovy drakes I raised this year. I had wanted to keep him and butcher the extras. :( Not sure what his issue was. Found him in the morning flat on his belly, feet out behind him, glassy eyed, and drooling. He seemed a bit better when I put him in the garage for the day, but I found him dead when I returned from work.

- How do you teach a dog not to go pee in the house garage? He goes in there and sees car tires and automatically lifts his leg like he does on tires outside. :he He doesn't get the difference.

- Want to schedule with a poultry processor in Baltic to have my heritage roos and drakes butchered. I just don't have the time or energy to do it myself. He'll bag for resale.

- October 25 I'm looking forward to a machine quilting class. :D

- My neighbor is now hooked on Kombucha and calls it liquid speed. She uses it like coffee. She likes it very tart. I've started drinking it direct from the first ferment and at room temperature. I've learned to enjoy the mild taste over the hard, tart, vinegary taste it get after a second ferment in bottles (even with some fruit added). I'm drinking around 16 ounces every morning and running out of fresh Kombucha very quickly.

- Trying to revive my water kefir grains so I can try some in coconut water. But my grains just don't seem to want to multiply. :hu

- Healthwise I'm feeling a bit better. Having less foggy brain, but still I get very tired and have to push to get much done. Buying the book The Mood Cure to read and considering supplements for adrenal support. When I feel sluggish I am also easily distracted (like spending too much time here :p), then I get this anxious/panicked feeling about things that aren't getting done. Grabs me in my throat and possibly contributes to the headaches. :barnie Something needs to give. I don't have a doctor who I would say I "trust." I want to go back to the wellness center I used to do a detox and first get educated on whole food healing. BUT that is an hour away and takes out of pocket money I don't have right now. :(

Nuff dumping for now. ;)

Dump away. It makes you feel better.

About that frost???? The storm that hit us yesterday was and is flipping cold. I think it should be over by you around Sunday. I think this will certainly be the frost your waiting for.

I hope you feel better.

:hugs
