Just wanted to also add, Zoe, our other big dog, is a redbone coonhound/bloodhound mix. She's never chained, and the most she'd do is lick somebody to death!

Now, Aly....just because I think it's one of the saddest things to see doesn't mean you have to feel that way also, you know. No need to get offended and all! :)

Still....the dog sounds like a potential law suit waiting to happen, Aly. A dog that bites people just because they are "in his space" isn't really a safe thing to have around children or anyone else, for that matter. With all the nice dogs in the world, why would anyone want a dog that can't be allowed off a chain for fear he'll damage someone?

I have to keep him UTD on rabies shots because we know he'll bite anyone who trespasses.Chaining him is the only way to keep trespassers (and friends) safe. We can trust him in our yard if it's our family ONLY.
A dog that bites someone breaking into your home can be excused, I guess. But what if that someone was trying to get your child out of a burning bedroom? :hu

But then...this is America and you are free to have any kind of animal you wish on your property. If you have to chain it to keep it there and to keep it from biting someone, well, that is probably the best thing. :thumbsup

Debeaking is done while birds are chicks. They just take nippers and lop off up to half of the whole beak...I've even seen the top beak nipped clear up to the face before. They do this to prevent cannabalism in commercial operations and they do this to prevent the same thing with other places where the birds are over crowded.

These folks buy their birds as pullets from the hatchery, so I'm not sure if this isn't just standard because the hatcheries are overcrowded? Surely, no one would request their birds be mutilated in this manner unless you were running a CAFO? :hu

PISSI meets ad lib....feel free to call a meeting anytime you need support or encouragement with your PISSI issues! :D  :gig

Around here, if you buy ready to lay pullets from the hatchery they are already debeaked. If you order day old chicks, they are not unless you request it. I have had many of each...and honestly, although I wouldn't order chicks this way, it doesn't seem to hurt the birds any. They still eat and drink normally. It does look ugly though, and leaves them pretty defenseless.

Wouldn't you say that the procedure itself is probably pretty painful? The soft tissue in the beak and such....the thought of it hurts me just to picture it! :barnie
