Yeah, his teacher said they all have to be the same color in the dozen. I doubt they will count off for speckles, as this is unavoidable in brown eggs, especially the deeper brown ones.

Its more of a lark for me and I hope they do well but am not expecting much. All the produce and animals that I think should win at the fair, never do! :/ :p

FF!! That woman is certifiable! Couldn't she at least give those eggs away? What a shame! :(

FF, I tried your link but it wouldn't go through. Thanks, though. I'll do a quick search and see if I can find something similar.

Dang it, FF! :p I don't have Adobe downloaded yet, so I can't open that one either! I found several good ones also that were pdf files. I tried to download Adobe last month but it was 5 hours into the download and still hadn't completed (evil dial-up) :tongue and I had to get off line for some reason. Just never got back to it, you know?

I did find one spot that says they candle them to look for blood spots, exterior appearance of uniform color, shape and size.

His Ag teacher is going to candle them and grade them for him before the contest. Surprisingly enough, this little county came in second in the state and second in nationals on their poultry judging, so his teach must know his stuff. I know Jonny sure likes him and follows him around like a puppy!

Hey, all, I called a local guy who advertised St. Croix/Katahdin cross sheep and he was super nice! Said I could come by anytime to see them and said we could work something out as far as stud service at breeding time.

If you remember, I was going to buy a couple Dorper/Katahdin crosses from a fellow 3 counties over for around $100-$125 each if he didn't have any bottle lambs. I wasn't too pleased with the cleanliness or conformation of his sheep/operation but I had little choice if I wanted hair sheep.

BUT...this new guy is just over the mountain from me! AND, he charges $90-$110 for his lambs...so cheaper and closer, so cheaper on gas! He also states he has great colors....had a black lamb with a white star this morning! He said he would give me a call if he had a bottle lamb or two but, if not, his lambs should be weaned in March! I'm sooooo close to getting my lambs! :weee :celebrate

Today Eli and Jon finished my growing stand! Had to build it right in my bedroom, as this stairway is built for munchkins and we couldn't build it and then move it there. Also, the ceiling is under 6 ft. in bedroom so they had to cut some inches off the height! Can you imagine ceilings that low? :p  These little old folks built the house according to their comfort....I find that enchanting! :)

SO....closer to starting seedlings. I don't want to start too soon, as our growing season starts just a little later than most places. I am ordering seeds this week! :ya

Bee I wish you lived near me! We could get together and you could teach this city-slicker a few great things!

I am hoping my day old chicks do well and that our garden works this year so we can add more critters in the fall. I have no clue as to what I am doing . . lol. I love reading your posts and quite a few of the others - it is so encouraging :frow :love

Thanks, Okie! That's nice of you to say! Truth? We don't know what we are doing half the time on this forum either ....we are just jumping into it after some research and hope we can fly! ;)

I've tried a lot of new things in the last few years! I've been around farming and livestock of some sort all my life, around gardens as well. Helped do the work when I was growing up and had my own....but, you know what? I don't think anyone ever feels like they have a handle on all the ins and outs of this SS lifestyle....but we get an A for effort, don't ya think?

I think that's what makes this whole forum kind of fun...learning about new things together, seeing the pics of everyone else's efforts and hearing about what NOT to do! It helps if you can eliminate some part of your learning curve because you got to see someone else go first and got to see what to avoid.

I wished you live near me also....these country folks around here have no desire to play with me! :gig Says it looks like too much work and why in the world would I do all that when I can just go down to the store and buy my food??? :smack

What a relief! I thought I was the only one with both feet in but not nearly enough of a clue!
