Hi BlBird,

If you have to declare a business, I would do a sole proprietor/doing business as (DBA) business. Less forms/taxes to pay and your federal/state income tax rate should be less since you are a student with no other income. As long as you keep track of your expenses, you can use your personal credit card to purchase supplies.

You need to find out about sales taxes - state, county, or city on soap, for both as a retail supplier (wholesaler) or as a retailer. It is just keeping track of it and paying the respective entity at the end of the year and make sure you keep that money separate so you have it!

You may have to register with the state a fictitious name for your business, which requires a small charge, to open a bank account.

Checking out starting a business in MN under the secretary of state of MN web site.

It may seem overwhelming at first but remember that no question is stupid and someone in the state/city will know the answer!

XMas season is just around the corner so you want to think about starting before next year?

Do you have a S.C.O.R.E. chapter near you? It is a group of retired business owners who help newbies. I think that is what it is called.

Thanks for the info everyone!! Still doing some decision making and research, but nothing will probably happen until next year, if even then.

I have a break from school and myy mom asked me to come home this weekend so I've been enjoying the animals and being close to nature again. I harvested my ornamental corn and the last of my heirloom Lima's for seed. I almost have some squashes and garlic to pull.

I hadn't realized how much I missed the kids! Tears me up just thinking about leaving them again. And they've grown so much since I last seen them! I still have those two bucklings left to sell though! (I wanted to add, after burning their horn buds TWICE, they have FINALLY stopped growing!)

I can't get out of the city fast enough. Next year I'll definitely have to do something different.

That is how I used to feel, when I went to college in Buffalo. I was a six hour drive from home and didn't have much money, definitely not enough for the bus. I hitch hiked home a few times, visited the zoo a lot and found that campus had a country getaway that I could go to, when they scheduled them. I also spent as much time on the quad as was possible. It rained a lot in Buffalo :/

Totally agree. The only reason I am staying where we are is because even though we are like 30 minutes from Denver we are far enough north (and far enough outside of our town proper) that we don't really hear alot of any outside noises (although those stupid oil people have something going on about a mile or less away . bastards.) we have 8.5 acres and I plan on making the most of it!

Good luck with everything you are doing and want to accomplish! Bummer about having to be in the city, but at least you have those trips home! :)

Thanks..
8.5 acres isn't bad. What I really need to do is buy some land up north, I do have enough money for a couple of acres. Doubt I could live in a tipi in the winter though..

Anyway, some good news! My mom had her test today and she passed! She is now a CNA!! Whooo! I'm so proud of her! That is one job that is plentiful in our area, so she'll have a job in no time I'm sure!

Congrats! :thumbsup :thumbsup :weee :woot
Being a CNA is hard work, but it's also one of the most rewarding jobs I've ever worked. Was a CNA for almost three years, and my mother has been one for the past 30 years.

Congrats again!

On the land north buying you could always pick up land with a house somewhere like North Dakota :D relatively cheap there! :gig
