We got a heritage hog (well, 1/3 of one) this year and it was raised on scraps including a lot of skim milk/whey, and finished on frostbitten peaches and acorns, and oholymotherofmercy it is, I think, the best meat I've ever eaten in my life. The fat is amazing. I used it to sautee the veggies for Hoppin' John and everyone raved about it, even my littles who are slightly skeptical of bean casseroles.

So, nothing against grain fed pigs, just sayin', there are other ways to go that are pretty darn delicious.

BarredBuff, curious why you are ordering onion plants rather than starting from seed or sets? You are so much further south, I would assume your longer season would allow you to grow from seed or sets, since I can grow from sets and get nice sized onions here in my zone 3 garden?

From what we have read, onions are hard to start from seed. SO we ordered plants.


Oh and today my 3 new apple trees came in and I am re breeding rabbits and killing chickens tomorrow.....

Welll we got 8 meaties processed today and had to throw one out it looked bad. I got my blackberry briars tonights, and I need to get some rabbit manure, ash and hoe it into the spot and set them out. Then tomorrow after church we need to set out our trees. I also need to get our tater patch finished and tomato patch readied, and put rotted straw down for onions and then fix a carrot bed plus kill 9 more meaties..........

Yepp start planning now and absolutely stalk flea markets for supplies!!

OH I got the briars out and got the onions mulched, Im satisfied but worn out.

The new apple trees are planted! Our orchard is shaping up, we need to cut 4 down and plant about 6 more.

are you reading up on grafting etc.? orchards are hard but once you know the secrets they do well.

our peach trees require pulling baby peaches off so the others can mature....when we didn't bother, they were puny. Now we make sure we take the time to space the fruit til maturity and yes, we get good peaches!
