You do have some interesting growing conditions up there. The manure in the bottom of the bed trick is something I was recently reading about. Seems to work really well. I am experimenting with cold frames right now trying to coax some extra growing time out of my garden.

Ok, to answer a few questions first.
We have Cochins, Cuckoo Marans/Cochins, RIRs and EEs.
The best price we could get is $6, but neighbors being what they are

We do give quite a few to a 93 year old man that we know, who loves that he can eat eggs like he did in the Old Country again.
I am also going to start giving them to some newer elderly neighbors who could use the help.
Then, we are able to take the excess into the local natural feed store, and they pay us $4 up front for them.
But, since we are now making our own feed, we do not go in as often.

The flock is going to be pruned here shortly though. Have a few older hens that are not laying any more, and in Alaska, it is very important to not winter chickens over a second time.
Very costly to do so.
Oh I was expecting Brahmas and Chanteclers. Why cant you have chickens over two years with the wintering??
The second year of laying is always slower, but in Alaska it often goes down to none. To feed a chicken that is giving you no return fo 6 months, is not smart.
Ohhh.

This winter, we are going to scavange many more old tires, and save money for another load or two of dirt.
I plan to grow Sweetmeat winter squash in tires so I need lots!
I just have to ask at the local auto mechanic, and get 'em for free :D It saves them from having to pay the disposal fee!
