Now, you've just got me curious about inducing lactation. How in the world does that happen? I get spontaneous lactation, but not induced... :)

New or used.....it really depends on you and what you find. I didn't want to buy a used pump because all the ones I saw/looked at didn't seem to come from the cleanliest of people. I ended up buying one of those $200 electirc medela ones from babies r us. I still have it and plan to use it when/if we ever have another one. I loved that pump; my son and I didn't quite "get it", although I will admit I wasn't as strong or persistant as I should have been. I breast fed him for about 3 weeks (or tried to...) and pumped for another 5. Yes, pumped for 5 straight weeks and fed him BM from the bottle. :ep But the good news is that you can pump to your schedule, not the baby's and you can do it as often as you can and freeze what you don't immediately use.

It can be done, my friend!

BB, I think you should get a Supplemental Nursing System. I don't know of anyone has done induced lactation without.

I would also be extremely cautious with using goat milk as that could be misinterpreted as abuse, especialy in this time when the adoption is not 100% complete. IF you feel you have enough evidence to prove that goat milk is safe for infants, for God's sake, PLEASE pastuerize it!

From Dr. Sears "Parents of babies allergic to cow's milk and other commercial formulas often ask if it's safe to use goat's milk as an alternative. In theory, goat's milk is less allergenic and more easily digestible than cow's milk, but it should not be used as a substitute for infant formula. Like cow's milk, it can cause intestinal irritation and anemia. "

(If you heard the story about the vegan couple that killed their baby by feeding it apple juice and soy milk..... then it would make sense. Here's the story: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article1768368.ece )

As for herbal supplements, fenugreek and milk thistle worked the best for me. I never did produce enough (even with pumping) to fully satisfy my little ones, but it helped. Sure wish I'd known about NT & the formulas back then!
I pumped for almost 9 months with both of mine.

I never knew you could induce lactation like that. How wonderful.

I really enjoyed breast feeding my babies, wonderful experience. If you can make that happen, I would! If not, many happy babies were raised without being nursed. But if you can make it happen, I say go for it! I've heard of things to suppress lactation but not stimulate it.
