and then Mr. Chicken Keeper could sic the dogs and back yard bull on Mr. Ignorant
I dont have a pit bull...but i do have a jack russell! One day a guy on the street wanted to "chat" with me..rather unsavory character..I told him to back off or I would sic my dog on him..."what, that little ankle biter" he said...
I said..." nahh she usually goes for the throat" See I'll show you" So I patted my chest and Rosie leaped up into my arms without me even having to bend over.....he took off rather quickly

After finally convincing everyone in the house to get chicks, that story came out :th

Luckily, it was the day after we had brought them home

We have three chicks now, one of whom is a banty. We have a big fenced in yard in Cape, and there is really no reason to not have chickens on the property.

Obviously, I could understand a problem with roosters, but hens are not going to harm anyone or anything (cept' maybe the Palmetto bugs :D )

It is amazing to hear people's responses when they come over. BF's sister came by and asked how we were going to process them before we ate them. I am so used to this forum, and just the natural way of life that I forget some people just don't know...

I was a bit surprised to see my local news on the forum, hello fellow Fort Myers friend :thumbsup

More comments on that board:

Most of Lehigh has 4 lots per acre. 4-- 1/4 acre lots. 4 Wells per acre for drinking water. 4 septic tanks per acre. Now we ad 5 people for each 3 bedroom house per lot. Thats 20 people per acre. Now ad 1 dog per home. 4 Dogs per acre. 6 chickens per home. 24 chickens per acre. No county water--no city sewers. Sorry. im not drinking your water. Makes me wonder where brown eggs come from.
Idiot.

Another one:
I'm sorry but keeping chickens for eggs in a non agricultural area is ridiculous. Honestly, eggs are not that expensive. Are we going to start letting people slaughter chickens in their backyard for food? The woman who says she is forced to keep her chickens in the garage should be arrested for animal abuse. I wonder how much money these poor chicken farmers spend on cigarettes, beer and lottery tickets.
Roosters are extremely loud and if the area is not kept clean it stinks and attracks rats. And what happens when they decide raising chickens was a dumb idea? I had to call animal services in Ft Myers because there were two chickens in the Bell Tower parking lot. Just buy the eggs at the store people.
I never buy beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets but I have 60 chickens in a pretty small area. Another idiot.

And ...
chickens only produce about 2 eggs a day so you'd need a lot.......are they noisy? I bet they're smelly.
Wow ... I want the chickens he's talking about! 2 eggs a day? BUT my chickens don't smell. Hmmm..

And...
I would like the people who support people raising chickens in their yard to drive by a chicken coop up north where it is allowed. Not only does it stink, it is disease and bacteria infested.
If you are ok with it next to your house, fine but I don't want it next to my house. If I need eggs or chicken, I will go to Publix. Your comments about saving money are ridiculous. You can buy a dozen eggs and a whole chicken for less than $10. I bet these people spend more money to feed the chickens than that.
Yes, I spend money for feed, but the beautiful orange yolks and delicious taste make it worthwhile. Plus I feed a lot less in the summer when they are free-ranging.

I can't find the comment now but there was one that said you can't ban roosters because then the chickens wouldn't lay eggs. So why have any chickens at all?

It's worth the hour or two to read all of the comments. Such idiocy and antagonism in the world. I'm ashamed that we've gotten so far from our roots that going to the grocery store seems more reasonable and healthy than raising your own food.

Did the one commenter talking about northern chicken coops actually stop and take soil and water samples and have them tested for bacteria and disease? Good grief, I hate people who make such broad statements with nothing to back it up.

We went through an ordeal in our city to keep our chickens too. It always bugged me when people would bring up the cost factor. We don't raise chickens to save money! We raise them because we don't want to eat that crap in the grocery store. It is more expensive raising our own chickens for eggs, but it is worth it to us.

And the person who said it was animal abuse for a person to keep chickens in a garage? Have they seen the sizes of the cages on large poultry farms? They are kept in 9" x 9" cages and can't even move.

Wow, I'm getting worked up all over again. People are just so stupid sometimes.

The person keeping the chickens in the garage is ME! and they have a window A/C unit I installed just for them  Unfortunately I live in a deed restricted area....but I am continuing the fight for everyone else in Lee county and looking for property in Ocala Fl. Looking to get several Ag acres to begin our SS lifestyle. I will rent this house out and wipe my feet before I leave.

Well, I see nothing wrong with keeping your chickens in a garage. I'm sure your garage is bigger than our coop, and pretty nice with the A/C too! :D

When we were going through our whole ordeal with the city council, one of the members on the council said (after seeing pictures of our coop and chicken tractor) that she couldn't believe we keep our chickens in those little things, especially during the winter, and said we were being inhumane. We made our coop and tractor large enough to accomodate 6 chickens, though we only had 3 at the time. I just couldn't believe how clueless they were as to where our food comes from, and how it is produced.

I think people are thinking that you never ever let them out of the garage. I am working on a way to have my bantams (especially silkies) in my garage during the winter, letting them out through a little pop door during good weather.

Being so open in the article, aren't you concerned about the enforcement people coming to your door?

It just comes down to the fact that people are stupid and ignorant. Say that, and move on, because it's very unlikely you'll change their minds. When SHTF, laugh when they are starving. (Well, maybe not laugh; I would, but I'm somewhat cruel like that, especially when it regards morons.)

We know better, afterall. :)
