If you are looking in the Ocala area, the Ocala National Forest is a great place. We have a cabin there. It's close enough to Ocala for once a week shopping/banking/etc. but out in the boonies with no animal restrictions (well, as long as you stay out of "developed" areas...I guess the bears don't know about the restrictions ) with plenty of hunting and fishing and swimming/boating available. And now is definitely a good time to buy. I wish our cabin was sitting on more land. We have a double lot behind us that I'm checking into.walkaboutjacks said:The person keeping the chickens in the garage is ME! and they have a window A/C unit I installed just for them Unfortunately I live in a deed restricted area....but I am continuing the fight for everyone else in Lee county and looking for property in Ocala Fl. Looking to get several Ag acres to begin our SS lifestyle. I will rent this house out and wipe my feet before I leave.
Yeppers 400 chickens would stink! I have 6 in my garage on sand and I scoop every day..no stink at at allFarmerChick said:I think chickens stink!
I am not a 'bird' person....I can smell birds a mile away.
I think all birds stink truly. they have that 'smell'---well I know the smell LOL
my 400 chickens did stink
something about birds to me that just reeks
Exactly. Poop stinks if you let if build up or there's a lot of it.Shiloh Acres said:I'm not fond of duck-smell up close, but as long as I'm not sniffing them ...
My chicken coop DID have a little smell this afternoon, maybe the rain got in last night but I do have a broody on a nest that might have pooped (and that DOES reek!) and someone smashed an egg -- again!
Normally it's fine though, and I can't smell it anyway until I walk in. IMO it's all in how you keep the animals. I mean, a dog or cat can stink too, if you're not cleaning up after them. I have a great sense of smell, and 99% if the time I'm sure that my animals wouldn't bother anyone as far away as a neighbors yard would be.
Now, when rut season comes and my buck is over a year old now, we shall see ...
Hello to you too!! Well so far things are looking good....we might just get this passed! I was talking to another lady in Cape coral who has chickens, and she says probally CC won't be included in the ordinance change as it has a seperate city ordinance and a mayor? I don't see how John Manning who is commisioner of District 1 (cape coral) could vote for it for his district and then it still not be allowed? It's all Lee county after all......but then I am just started learning all this political chicken poop. Ha! and we are front page news in our little local paper again today! News Star. I cant believe the coverage all this is getting!!Florezian said:After finally convincing everyone in the house to get chicks, that story came out
Luckily, it was the day after we had brought them home
We have three chicks now, one of whom is a banty. We have a big fenced in yard in Cape, and there is really no reason to not have chickens on the property.
Obviously, I could understand a problem with roosters, but hens are not going to harm anyone or anything (cept' maybe the Palmetto bugs )
It is amazing to hear people's responses when they come over. BF's sister came by and asked how we were going to process them before we ate them. I am so used to this forum, and just the natural way of life that I forget some people just don't know...
I was a bit surprised to see my local news on the forum, hello fellow Fort Myers friend
