I gotta check THAT out!!
Ditto that! "Yes son, you can got back to eating the parmesan cheese by the spoonful. I know I told you to stop, but now I'm saying you can." (Not kidding, he'll seriously eat the stuff by the spoonful if I let him!)

While I want the plastic one piece lids, I've been using one-piece metal canning lids. I was blessed to win a shopping spree, and that's how I got the stuff to get started canning. While they didn't have mason jars, they did have the beautiful Italian canning jars, and I got three of those :D But they come with one piece metal lids. So I've been saving those lids for frig storage, and canning with the ball lids/rings. Also, instructions that came with those jars said to let the jars/lids completely cool in the water to ensure a seal, and I just wasn't sure how that would work with my steam canner. Thankfully, the regular mouth lids and rings fit JUST fine!

I picked up a bunch of those plastic crates at WM a few weeks ago at $3.00 each. They are handy for so many things. I'm making a footstool for my daughter (removable top) so she can use it for storage when she's working on a project.

I store my rings by means of having the kids glom onto them and use them for all sorts of building, craft and pretend-game purposes (a particularly popular one is playing "curling", really more like stickless shuffleboard, on the kitchen floor). Then every year at the beginnning of canning season we have to have a roundup :p

I keep the all of the unused NEW lids and rings in a plactic bag. Old rings go on the shoe string. And the jars go back under the house with the canned items.:)

I WANT A ROOT CELLAR!!!!:fl

Hope to be able to incorporate one into my dream bale-cob house when I build (few years down the road), ideally accessed from the kitchen, just like a pantry - but with stairs :D

Well I never liked the cheese but I found a set of shaker tops (6 tops different sizes) that fit mason jars! 3 for standard neck and 3 for tiny mason jars that were apparently made for jam. I have never seen the tiny ones for sale, and I wonder if they were made for salt and pepper shakers? I use three on my table finest for black pepper, Middle is great for Kosher salt, and the coarse works great for crushed red peppers (my family likes heat in food but it irritates me. Over near the stove, using the standard neck size, the fine is used for flour, Medium for Shake & Bake and the coarse for cracker or bread crumbs. To keep fresh there are plastic disks that can be slipped in either with or inplace of the screens the normal lid is used with the standard necks very usefull!
