Pat, who considers onions to be the sixth basic food group and can't cook without them :p
Ha! Here, too. Every meal starts out with a frying pan, olive oil, a handful of garlic and even more onions :D

Depends on the variety, but I would assume most grocery store onions are intended to be long keepers. I keep mine in a dark, dry place. My garden onions must have gotten a fungus or something, as they are rotting quickly, so my plan is to fry up loads of onions and garlic and freeze for future recipes. Sounds like it might work after all!

Congrats on the awesome deal--me&thegals

Look no farther than your local mesh laundry bag! I have used those mesh laundry bags to store stuff for years. They work well for potatoes too.

I bought a huge bag of onions last year, that averaged at 17cents a pound.. I stored them at at temp that was about 50 degrees over the winter. They did fine... I didn't do any freezing or dehydrating.. and I only lost a few near spring. It was well worth the minor loss.

Last year onions got to $2.50 a pound in my neck of the woods.
Maybe you could purchase a lot then sell some as prices go up. If they don't go up then there is always the freezer.
