Yeah, I think I want a couple of milk goats this year and then possibly pigs next year. More chickens are a definite! At least 6-8 more layers. The meaties will have to wait til next year. Maybe rabbits, but I think it might be too hot here. Still researching...

You have nice plans! I think for your area, Nubian goats would be your best bet. Meaties are good but VERY sensitive to the environment. So dont raise big batches, think smaller. We dont have pigs, yet. :D

No matter what type of garden you have, I'd look into putting a lot of old leaves, straw, hay, etc on top of it. It will help keep the moisture in. For that matter, you can even use old cardboard and/or paper.

Thanks Deb! That is definitely in the plan. My eyes are about to fall out of my head with all of the reading I've done today! I was really surprised at the amount of info I found on desert gardening once I really started digging.

The "old man" next door showed up this AM to see if we wanted to go to town, and since I got my direct deposit this AM, I jumped at the chance. It is very nice of him to do that for us, unfortunately it also means that we are at the mercy of his plans. He pulled up at 7 am, so I hadn't prepared breakfast yet and had only drank 1 cup of coffee. Not that big of a deal, except it turned into a 5 hour adventure!! Got the few things I needed at the market, mailed a few things that needed mailed and I was done with my errands! So the rest of the time was spent at Home Depot and the auto parts store in Yucca, 35 miles away! Thank God I brought my freezer bag for the meat and milk!! I'm also glad I was able to exercise will power at Home Depot! I could easily have walked out of there $200 lighter! The real bummer was when we stopped at the satellite "honor system" feed barn, they were out of layer pellets!! And we had just driven past the main store on the way back from Yucca! Oh well, I have enough for another week or so. I'll get it later!

I was so hungry when we got home!! I scrambled up some eggs with onions and made some toast, put on another pot of coffee and now I am feeling much better! And :woot in the mail today was the BYC calendar I won for the SS page contest! :ya It is beautiful!! :thumbsup
