Hmmmm... If you ever get the rooster (isn't someone always giving away a rooster?) then you are ready for silkies. Silkies are IMHO the best setting hens. they go back to back broody and are excellent mothers. Plus they are total yard candy.

I think we might have talked about this in the chicken thread, but what breed is your best broody? I like the australorp and the orpingtons, but I don't know if I can get them locally or if they would do well in heat.

They are breeds with the inclination, whether they use it is up to them. Buffs especially, Ive only had one broody. But if I get any this spring they will be broke because they are hitting the road and Im changing the direction of my flock.

My BO's and australorps did fine in the heat but stopped laying. For me, those little frou-frous really pull their weight. They lay thru the heat and thru the winter. So when my large fowl are not laying i still have those petit eggs to fall back on. But where they really earn their layer pellets is brooding. I keep large fowl because I like big eggs and I wanted a self sufficient source of meat...so I set the large fowl eggs under the silkies, they work their frou-frou magic and voila I have new layers and broilers.
I will however stop trying to convince you all..;)
They have worked really well for me.

Hey Kelly! Don't be surprised if I end up with a silkie! If I can't find a heavy bird for brooding, I wouldn't rule out a silkie. I was basically joking. After all, we gotta do whatever it takes... right?

And I don't know what your view out to the east is like, but did you see the moonrise last night? Gorgeous!

Have a blessed day!
