Ok, so now I have a question (sorry for hijacking your journal Cheerio!!) How much butter could one expect to get from, say, a quart of raw heavy cream??
I can get 1 lb of raw butter for 11.00, and 1 quart of raw heavy cream for $12.00. Is there any savings in that???
No worries HQ! It's a good question. I was wondering the same thing, but not with raw but store bought.

lets see if i can get my math straight here...
for the most part youll get just under 1/2 cream to butter...
2 cups of heavyr cream will get you just under 1 cup of butter

so 2 quarts would be the equivalent of 8 cups, should yeald your about 3 1/2 cups of butter.
1 stick is the equvalent of a 1/4 cup, and theres 4 sticks in 1lb...

so...you should get roughly about 3 1/2lbs of butter out of 2 quarts of heavy cream.

Soooo.... according to that I'd get over 1 1/2 lbs of butter from 1 quart of heavy cream...
Sounds like some savings to me for only 1.00 more for the qt of cream.

now the question is how do I convince my other half that its a good idea!! :gig

oh, oh! you couldn't do this in a mixer could you??? Got my shiney new kitchenaid... will it do that for me???

you can make butter from goats milk, its ust not as easy smply because the cream doesnt seperate as easy, you can either invest in a sperator (xpensive but if your a butter feind might be worth it) or be patient...gather your like as normal but let it sit in the back fo the fridge for a few days (takes at least 3 days for the cream to realy start to rise...then skim...
because it doesnt seperate easily your not going to get as much cram as you would froma cow, BUT the milk youll be left to drink will taste just as rich as fresh whole milk because of it...its only partially part skim.
save the cream into a ub in the freezer (just continue adding your cream) untill you have enough to make a deacent batch of butter.

look for a breed high in butterfat, nubians, nigerians, and their mixes tend to be the best if your looking to do butter because theyve got the highest fat content to the milk.
lamancah tend to do well too.
alpines togs and sannens have a lower butter fat content but tend to produce more milk.

given your climate and location though youd be perfect for nubians and nubian mixes who like dryer condiitions and do very well in the heat. nigies and nigie mixes would also work (there origionally from africa)
alpines togs and sannens are siss diary breeds so can be a little more sentiive to heat conditions.
Thanks Pinky! I have been doing a lot of reading in preparation for goats and have pretty much decided on nubians. I like their size and that they can be a dual-purpose breed. I also think a nubian/boer cross would make a lovely meat goat.

As far as butter goes, I think I'll have to find someone with cows and barter for milk. I love goat milk, but I love butter more! :p

I've read that you can do it in a mixer but stuff flies everywhere! Very messy! If I end up doing this on a regular basis, a churn is in my future!

you can do it in a mixer, i suggest going slow though so as not to make too much of a mess, the kitchenaid has the paddle mixer attatchemtn and that tends to be a lot less messy than the rgular wisk most mixers have...

you can also do it in a blender :D

Blender! I have a super duper blender!! How would one do that? My blender will make dust of slivered almonds in about 2.5 seconds flat.... So I have to be real careful what I put in it and how...

I think I have the paddle attachment for my kitchenaid, and thankfully it came with the splash shield anyway. If I can figure out how to make our own butter from the heavy cream we get and it turns out to be cheaper that sounds like a marvelous idea to me!

Besides, how many people say they can make their own butter :p Not many people that I know personally anyway!

So I've been reading today about Jojoba. A while back I saw a show on PBS, I believe, about a Jojoba farm here in the Mojave desert. The Jojoba was being grown for it's wonderful oil. This oil has many uses from a base oil for cosmetics, etc. to bio-diesel fuel and biodegradable lubricant. I have seen it being sold retail for $160.00 for 128 oz. That's about $1.25 an oz. I've got 4 acres of available space and my "soil" is the appropriate type.

Now to figure out if this will be a viable cash crop operation..... researching!!!

When I work at the dairy I make butter in the food processor. Makes the processor a mess but nowhere else! Works like a charm and very quickly!

So how would one do this in the blender? And how long does it have to run?
Very curious! It could save us a fair chunk of change if this works and isn't too time consuming/difficult...
