Many yrs ago I had a rental plot and loved it! The other renters were great and we rarely had issues with 2 legged predators....except once at collard season and Thanksgiving. ☹️. Normally good comraderie and some sharing, in person only, so a fun and productive experience. It was a time when I had no farm and lived in a high rise condos. A nice option. Do it!

i had a section that I tilled last year 1st yar 15x20-used for drying beans, sunflowers, melons, squash and ground cherries. Did pretty good in terms of weeds, though very rocky/sandy soil. Might be dependent on soil type, but you could lay down some weed/garden cloth as well in sections as a trial. There are some online for $10 for a 3ft x 50ft roll

if you plan on reusing the weed barrier fabric you want to buy some that will last. there is a lot of variation out there and we've had some that does ok for several years and others that barely lasted the season. a low priced version may not be all that great of a deal.

for the best effect we've had for smothering areas completely we put down a few overlapping chunks of plain cardboard (black ink printed is ok too, but the plainer the better - avoid shiny plastic coated or colored versions - remove tape, staples or labels) and then put the weed barrier fabric over that and then mulch on top of the weed barrier fabric (which protects it from the sun and reduces heat build up).

Well as of yesterday cry baby Brisket has finally settled in with the others. Everytime he would moo my wife would say mommmmmma 🤣. Didn't hear one single moo out of him yesterday. Unlike the first night where I hardly got any sleep from his constant mooing. You would think he could have went to the back of the pasture and moo in the opposite direction of the house. But no, he had to be at the head of the pasture and moo at the house to keep waking me up. I went and apologized to my neighbors for him disturbing the peace, they laughed.

The steer I raised came to me already weaned. The guy I bought him from weaned him so he wouldn’t go through my fence looking for mama. He also kept him a couple of months until we took pigs to slaughter, then delivered him. I bartered for the “extra” care with 10 Cornish Cross chickens, slaughtered, cut to wife’s specifications, vacuum sealed and frozen. Good trade for both of us!

Almost 9 in the morning! I slept late, hate it when I do that. Woke up in middle of the night and couldn’t go back to sleep. High today of 84F, I need to get outside and get going!

I'm up...that's a start :old having coffee and contemplating my schedule for work. Yeah, still that going on. Chores soon. My hay person got in a new trailer load of hay yesterday. Gorgeous third cut orchard! My goaties are loving it. With new grasses growing they are fat and sassy -- the kids are jumping and playing, then all fall into a pile to nap! Some good milk going on as they are growing so well. Think there are 3 or 4 more to kid. 🤔

Beautiful, warm day coming up!

On second cup of coffee, it’s cloudy today and rain coming tomorrow or Wednesday. I haven’t finished painting the end of the house, what’s left has to be done on an extension ladder, not my favorite. But I need to finish off 2 buckets of paint and maybe I’ll have enough. If not, a rainy day is always good for going to town for more paint.

I found enough scrap 2x4’s to trim out the 3 windows and got started on pre-painting those. I’ll put another coat of paint on those today. Can only do a few at a time, not enough room to lay them all out.

Trying to stay busy and get something productive done.

Today is flying by! It's beautiful weather and I want to be outside!

I wrote a little this morning, then went to the animal shelter to train an adorable landshark. :gig Bottle lambs are switching to bowl feeding today. One got it easily, the other one is dumb - even for a sheep

I'm telling myself that if I can write another chunk before I pick kids up from school, then I can garden with them.

Is cow manure good fertilizer? The answer is obvious. But just in case anyone is doubting. Really happy to see clover growing again 👍
