I woke up to coyotes howling close enough that I could hear them through the mobile home walls. Interestingly enough, when coyotes are close, the dogs go silent for the most part. Reason? So if coyotes breach the fence and come in, the dogs don't give their position away. Battle tactics. One of my dogs gave out a warning bark and the coyotes went silent. Massing for attack? Don't think so, they want an easy meal that they don't have to fight for and risk injury.

When we first moved here we heard the coyotes quite a bit,
Max Dog RIP was 4 at the time and didnt tolerate them with in ear shot, even if he heard them from across the bay.
Ziva 3 and Tony 2 dont hear them as much as Max did, but when they do, Tony is in full territorial mode, he too gives out a very deep, loud warning that they can hear across the bay, hahahah and so do all humans,

So that what you call it "territorial mode". I just always thought that rottweiler stance was. I see or hear something ain't right. I want to remind you, I'm big and you're small.

Yes, hahahaha
it is green, yellow and red alert mode, yes they, as with most dogs, are always watching.

Do your Rotts study the situation first, often for a while. Before they go into RAG (Red, Amber, Green) mode?

My wife's does. Anything abnormal, within sight or hearing distance. I parked a trailer out of place. He growled at it for several days, before he peed on it and it became his. 😂
