When we slaughtered 30-something Delaware roosters (never order straight run) I cut off the breast meat and packaged it. I cut off the leg and thigh meat and canned it. I simmered the bones and backs and canned the broth. I canned the backs and necks with cooked rice for dog food.

I think I'll be busy for awhile........

Thank you Bubba-Gump!

While I like to have some whole to roast on occasion, the cuts sure take less room to store! Plus, more options when thawed for cooking. Just my thoughts. I like the broth & then use of the rest for dog food. My dog is a little min pin, so she has an issue with some bones, LOL. But, all the other scraps are great for her....and the old cat who have few teeth now.

We slaughtered 10 BIG chickens today! I didn't get a live weight, because I just really wanted to get it done. Slaughtered weight was 56 pounds, 10 ounces. I spent the rest of the day cutting them up and packaging them. Packaged weight is 38 pounds and 13 ounces. And I have the carcasses in the ice cooler, will simmer them tomorrow for broth. Maybe I'll can the backs for dogfood. Still have 34 to go.

Both. We pluck them clean. When I cut them up, I do the breast meat as skinless and boneless.

I’m going to simmer the carcasses today and can broth.

I simmered the 10 carcasses today and canned 17 pints of broth. I picked meat off the bone and put 2 containers of "soup" in the freezer. I made chicken mole' for supper and still have a container in the refrigerator of cooked meat.

The deep litter was getting gross. No, it was past gross. Since the chickens don't "shoo" very well, we wrapped some green plastic 4' mesh around some trees with a run to the coop. I just said CX don't shoo, and they didn't. I had to carry them to the enclosure, then we took the run down and hitched the coop to the tractor. DH pulled the coop forward to a nice clean spot. We went to the sheep round bale and filled the back of the Mule with spent hay off the ground. We deep bedded the coop, then one by one I carried them back.

DH flung pads of hay and poop all around, then watered them in well. Some he spread further with a rake. The smell rivaled a raw sewage plant.

Then we cleaned the sheep lot. DH took FEL buckets to the garden and dumped them in a spot that we pulled some TALL weeds from yesterday. The sheep poop was dry, almost dusty, and scraped up easily. Then we spread it in the garden.

DH is in the shower, waiting my turn. We have had a ****ty morning. How's yours?

Um... Ew? When we move our tractor, I shake the feed scoop in the front and they all run forward and we just move it really slowly forward. They are nasty things, we moved our tractor nearly every day. If we missed a day or two... Yuck!

I've been deep littering it and it just reached that point.

I want to slaughter 15 this week, cut them all up, package and freeze them. Then do the rest next week.

I have the 10 we slaughtered last week, sold for $5 a pound. Total $198.72 Almost covers the cost of the feed.
