On Dr Phil today, he spotlighted what people are doing during the pandemic. He showed a food bank in San Antonio that had applications for 6,000 families, 10,000 showed up. Cars were lined up for miles for something to eat.

I'd be willing to bet that at least half of them live in a house with a yard. A yard that could be used to grow something to eat. But none of them will.

We were talking about the uncertainty with food today. I am praying my garden works out, and that we can find some hogs to kill and a calf.
I'm going to work the heck out of the garden this year. We have 2 feeder pigs, 1 is sold. We have 43 Cornish Cross, 25 are sold. This pays for what we keep and eat. We picked out a calf this week and will get it when the pigs go to slaughter in August. If we butcher it in March 2021, he will be a year and 5 months old.

You should be able to find hogs and a calf on Craigslist.

They are already talking about round 2 on this virus and that it will be worse than this one. Folks, stock up even more. If things are in short supply now because of sick workers that cannot perform their jobs, reckon what it will be if we get hit by another wave of Covid 19...…... just something to think about.

I have been needing to run fecals on my sheep so i'll know which ones need worming. Plus I like knowing which ones have good parasite resistance and which ones don't. BUT I could not find gloves and I was out. We got feed Tuesday and on the counter was 3 boxes of gloves! I was so excited and got a box. It's the little things.

Hubby has an early morning doctor's appointment tomorrow, so since we'll be out anyway, I'm stopping by Costco. We're grabbing one of the 4x8 sheds and putting it against the back of the house. I can run power to keep it from freezing. Brooder lamp and a 100 watt bulb should do it. We don't have a root cellar and this should work fine.

Potatoes are cheap to buy here as it's a major crop. Im thinking I'll go ahead and get the 4 boxes we need in the fall instead of getting as needed. They will store well in the shed. I've thought about getting sand and storing carrots in tubs there as well.

I'm not too worried about those of us on this forum, but I'm worried about all the people that have never bothered to grow their own food, don't even know what it looks like. A lot of people are gonna be hurtin'

More folks been taking an interest in my garden up front, not sure if I should be happy or nervous, honestly I'm more nervous. Most folks gonna just wait till last possible minute to even try growing plants cause of their normalcy bias and refusal to take a step in providing for themselves, just in case. And that is why I'm nervous, cause how many are gonna help themselves to my hard work?

Without doing the work themselves? If I have extra I dont mind sharing. But just cause its up front doesn't mean it's free game

I'm having the same thoughts. I think I'll be surrounding the main garden with electric fencing this year. I mentioned on a FB note that I'm hatching ducks and chicks, and expanding garden, and laying in canning supplies well before canning season starts. Not a one person mentioned that they'd be growing also... just "that's a good idea." Seriously? If it's such a good idea, why are they not doing the same?

They expect you to share. Why should they do the work of you're doing it for them. "We'll be heading to your house if something happens." I've heard that one.

I know a few people like that. They always get mad when they hit me up for money and I don't comply because I know what sort of spendthrifts they are. We've only loaned money once and that was special circumstances that we weren't expecting to be paid back. He still paid us back quicker than we thought prudent.

Heck my SIL was upset when we didn't take her any of the tuna I canned because I took a whole box down to my parents. She felt she was entitled to free food.

I think some people trust the system too much. It's a broken world with broken people that don't always do what is right.

I secured some extra plants on an order today. Plus, ordered a few extra laying hens, and a batch of broilers for the fall. I also got a good quote on a hog, and beef.
