That is what the California greys look like as chicks. It's not related to their sex.

I know they are some fancy shmancy birds  But, they are autosexing, meaning you are able to visibly sex them as day olds, without running two flocks to breed sex links. That a HUGE difference. They are smaller birds, not very meaty, but even at that, they are very interesting, and being they have Leghorn in their blood are terrific layers of BLUE eggs. I'm thinking of maybe getting some when prices go down a bit as a decent homestead bird. What does everyone else think about the breed? The eggs would sell well because everyone likes the blue eggs. The birds would sell decent because of the autosexing. I could give up a little meat to know ahead of time which ones were keepers and which were for meat :)
If you breed them you may get all kinds of off spring since they are cross breeds. I have some California whites that just hatched some chicks. The CW's are a cross between the California grays and leghorns. I got some chicks that are all white, some that are black with a white spot on their heads and some with white and black feathers. I don't know what color egg they will lay or how they will lay yet as they are still babies.
They breed true.

It would be interesting to see if the ones with the white spot on their head are males. I think I read that it is a sex-link trait in some crosses.
I'll know in about 4 months :D I found a started pair :woot

the legbars do breed true at this point...
While they are a "crossbreed" origiaonlly (like ALL none natural breeds) they have been bred multiple generations to a breed standard and do maintain the standard and breed true so there no considered an actual breed rather than a cross breed...

just like with dogs, breed a poodle to a cocker spaniel and its a mutt...
however develop a breed standard for that mix and work towards it by breeding into mulitple generations untill "ALL" offspring fit the described standard and it does eventually become an actual breed...
legbars are at this point considered a breed :D
would lvoe to see some in person from US lines and see if theres much a difference between euro legbars and us legbars :)

Hopefully you'll have the opportunity Tuesday :D Of course, they'll be little guys, but still ;)

You can see them if you google greenfire farms. This stock is from them as well, just bought elsewhere.

Greenfire imported them from the UK so they should be the same.

And yes they are autosexing, not sex linked. They breed true and the males and females always look different at hatch.

I'm waiting for them to come down in price. Hubby won't let me spend that much on a blue egg layer unless is a magnificent wheaten ameracauna rooster. He saw one at a show and said that it was the type of rooster he wants. I have EE and want some real ameracaunas, so he just gave me the look when I said I wanted the Legbars since they aren't a dual purpose bird. He barely accepts that silkies are a useful bird.
