well they survived the night! It got down to 15 last night (stupid weather said it wasn't supposed to go past 20!) It was 18 when I woke up and I went out to the girls... one corner of the front tarp had came loose so wind was blowing in the cages! :he

But I checked the thermometer I put in the cages and it still said 23! and all the babies were snug and warm... I didn't pull them out but I did dig around in the nests and felt them all to make sure we hadn't lost any... So far so good! :ya

I can't believe they are doing so well in this cold! I thought for sure we would loose them! :weee I don't want to brag too much though over the next 2 days it's supposed to keep getting colder... :hit

baby bunny update... we lost one just after a couple of days... but it wasn't from the cold... mama I think squished it... when if found it it was still warm and belly was full... So that mama was down to 3 babies so I took 2 from my flemish and fostered them over and they are all doing great! All 18 babies from 3 mama's are double in size already with big fat bellies! Sorry still no pics... it's been monsterously cold so I haven't taken extra time with them being uncovered to take pics...

Another bunny update... I posted a Flemish girl we have on craigs list for sale... I stated that I would trade her for a buck (since I lost my big papa) and that same day I got a call from a breeder just up the road... He breeds new zealands... but last summer his little girl wanted to show a checkered giant for 4-H... She also took him to a few rabbit shows and did very well with him... But he eats like a horse (they could feed 3 new zealands with the food he eats) and she wants to show a goose this year instead of him anyway... so they offered him to me for free!!! He was spoiled with load of attention so is very friendly and so BIG and pretty! he's just over a year old and I hope he does well with the ladies this coming spring! He was kinda jumpy the first day or two we had him home... so I've held off taking pics... but I'm going to try to take a few pics of him soon! Not everyday you get a pedigreed best of show quality buck for free! So that made my whole week! even though... the whole point of trying to sell the girl was to cut down on feed costs :hide and instead me posting her on craigslist added to the problem with a new bun! hahaha

more good news a friend of ours got 2 deer and offered me some deer meat! hubby hates deer and I can't hunt so I haven't had deer in several years! our friend also said he's going back out next week and said he would try to get me another one if the season holds out! woot!

Wow has it been 2 months since I posted an update? :ep it's been crazy here getting the kiddos up to date on the school work... We got behind when my father passed in October but now we are just about back on track!!! woot!!! Good thing too... Spring is coming!!!

As for the baby buns I posted about last time... they all did great and a few found new homes... I still have a few for sale but looks like they will be sent to freezer camp... I have 6 New Zealand boys... and no one ever wants boys... and my Flemish I have 4 beautiful girls... but no one wants the Black ones right now... or they want me to hold them for a few months... ummmm... NO... not unless they plan on paying for an extra cage and feed costs! :smack So looks like these girls will be sent to freezer camp as well...

Today is the big day with some new mama buns! (Although they prob won't give birth till middle of the night tonight...) But I have 2 first time mama's due... One "LilMama" already has some fur pulled!! The other "Speckles" hasn't taken an interest in her nest box yet... but Her mom waits to pull fur till she has them! so I'm hoping Speckles will due the same... She used to have the best personality of all my babies and she has the most amazing speckled black and white coat! She is also the largest Flemish Giant we have! But about 2-3 months ago (when she got to breeding age) she became the most evil little fur ball!!! She even tried to bite my daughter and you have to be careful getting in her cage to get her water dish... Not sure why on earth she decided to become evil but typically I DO NOT tolerate that in a rabbit... But... I did feed her for almost a year, and she wasn't always this way... So I figured I would get a few batches of babies out of her before she becomes stew... I hated to waist ALL that feed (since she is a royal piggie) and time just to butcher her... So this is her first litter and I'm hoping even though she is a grouchy cantankerous evil fur ball.... I hope she is a good mom... she comes from a very temperate bloodline and she was the most docile out of her whole litter :fl But if she messes this up then she is gone!!! I don't care how pretty she is!

Any how... I am going to take a few pics after bit... my daughter has an online show and tell with her homeschool class... and she wants pics of big mama... So I'll post some pics after bit! :bun

I've also been contemplating trying to hatch out a few eggs from my birds... Right now we have a silkie rooster and the only girls laying eggs are some mutts I bought from tractor supply... I think they are cinnamon queens but one of them ended up being white with tan specks in her feathers... she lays brown eggs though so I don't have a clue what she is... Either way they are GREAT layers and not too flighty... I just don't want to hatch out a bunch of useless ugly mutts... ROFL I'm afraid the slikie in them will decrease their laying qualities and they also wouldn't be much for meat either if I processed the extra roos... BUT it would be free chickens... So the last few eggs I got are sitting on the counter instead of going in the fridge... Waiting to see If I put them in the bator or not... ROFL

:woot I just went out and caught my Black newzealand doe giving birth! So cool! as many buns that I have raised I've never got to see them give birth... Still couldn't see much since she was in the box but still cool none the less!

I gave her a treat when she was finished and got to count the babies! 9!!! I think 6 white ones and 3 black ones... but I was counting fast so they wouldn't get cold in the wind so those numbers could change! She was a first time mom and so far is doing great! after I had finished she hopped back in there to check on them then jumped back out!

Other doe who is due today may not even be knocked up... :barnie she is still showing NO signs of making a nest and ate like a piggie when I gave her some pellets... She won't let me check her belly she growls at me when I pet her back... I did have the crockpot talk with her today so maybe she will get her booty in gear and give me some babies tonight! :bun I have no patients for cranky buns... and if she wasn't my favorite and so sweet last summer and fall I would have gave up on her ages ago...

I hope with spring coming up these babies sell a little better than my last batch... to help pay for the expense of adding some new cages and of course buy more feed... If not I'm going to canning and eating rabbit out the wazzu! :gig

ok it was the last nice weather day we are going to have here all week so I wanted to get most of my outside chores done... I went ahead and put the nest boxes in with my 3 bunny mama's that are due this weekend..

I'm going to try and rig up a low watt lamp under each nest box to add more heat since the temps will get down to 20's this weekend ( other 2 gals till spring... unless I can get this under the nest box heater lamp idea perfected...

I got to go to our local Mennonite store today! I love that store! has all sorts of goodies on my wishlist... (food and grain mills, steam juicers, any size canning jar you could ever want!) it's a 40 min drive so I don't get to go that often...

So it was a pretty good day! :D
Hey where is that store at? Sounds like a good one!
