Dac did you raise the duck yourself??? What kind of duck was it?
It was an Easter duck. What happened is that Easter 2008 my sister-in-law got two ducks and some chicks for her grandkids. No one was prepared for ducks or chicks. The chicks died within a few days and they gave the two ducks to us. I was not really ready for ducks but we took them anyway.

We raised the ducks in a portable rabbit cage on blocks in the shower. It was too cold to put them outside and having them in the brooder with chicks didn't work. The ducks were too big and clumsy and killed a chick accidentally, plus they are messy.

When the ducks got big enough we put them outside with the chickens. They didn't like the pond and started chasing the chickens. After doing some research I decided they were drakes therefore weren't going to give us any eggs.

Butchering day came and the ducks moved to the freezer. One duck to us and one duck back to the sister-in-law and her husband. They helped with processing so they got a duck.

So, yes I raised the duck and it was a Pekin. Pekins are domesticated mallards that are incapbable of flight and are all white.

"Surgeon Generals Warning" Smoking Duck can be habit forming.
:plbb

Duck is something I never acuired a taste for. Glad you enjoyed it. I have never tried it smoked so may have to give it one more try.

Edited because I forgot to finish my post before I hit the post button.
It can be habit forming. I'm thinking about raising more ducks but I am not ready yet. Ducks have different requirements from chickens.

I have a chance to get a bunch of muscovies, and if I got them, I'd raise them for meat. I'm not a big duck fan, although I have never had domestic duck. Do you think they would sell well, or should I just forget about it. If you have ever had wild, could you telll me whether the taste/texture is comparable? For me, it is the texture thing.

I have only raised two ducks and have only consumed this one. I have no idea how Muscovies would sell.

I guess wild duck would be a little more flavorful and have more texture since their muscles are used more than the slow moving, nonflying Pekins.

Brining to tenderize the meat and a slow moist cook like smoking can do wonders. That duck was really good, just not enough of it.

I haven't posted in almost three weeks.

First of all, a few new folks here. Welcome.

Now for my mild rant.

Tomorrow I take off for the wild west on my new job. Still don't know exactly where I will be working though. Because I'm leaving tomorrow we decided to go out for dinner and see a movie, Angels and Demons. The web site for our local theater indicated that X-Men Origins, Wolverine was showing in addition to Terminator, Star Trek, and Angels and Demons. We have already seen X-Men and I want to see the other three movies. Angels and Demons was supposed to start at 6:45.

We go to a Chinese place that everyone raves about. People in Southern Illinois have no idea what good Chinese food is. The food was bland, no taste at all.

Next stop is the theater. We walk in and look at the show times. They were not what was advertised. X-Men starts at 6:45, Star Trek at 7:00, and I think Angels and Demons at 7:30. We point out to the staff that the posted times are not was advertised. Their response, we can't do anything about that and new movies start on Thursday. Now Angels and Demons is the longest of the movies and we didn't feel like waiting 45 minutes or an hour for the movie to start so we go with Star Trek. Well 7:00 comes around and the movie isn't starting. My wife goes out to check, Angels and Demons has already started. It started at 6:45. I go out front to see what is going on. The schedule has been changed. Now I am furious. There are only a few people in the theater and we questioned the staff enough that they knew what movie we wanted to see and no one let us know that the schedule had been corrected. I ask to see the manager and after explaining to the manager what was going on she gives us some free tickets.

Still unhappy about it but I'm getting over it.

Then we stop at McD's to get ice cream cones. When we in in the queue to pay some guy bumps us from the rear. My wife is driving so I get out to check the back of the car. The guy driving the car that bumped us glares at me like it was my fault he bumped us. No damage. We pull up to the window to get our cones. They have to go downstairs because they ran out of cones. So, pull around and wait.

What an evening.

I guess you had one of those days when nothing went right. I would have been upset, too.

I'm not much of a movie go-er, but I would like to see Wolverine (DS said it was really, really good) and Angels & Demons (the book was better than The DaVinci Code, IMO).

We have a great Chinese place here. If you're ever in the area, my treat.

Good luck on your new job.

I had a pull up and wait experience last night at McDonald's too. Probably close to the same time as yours: 9:35. Waited 5 minutes for my crispy chicken to go on my sandwich.
How did you like Star Trek? I'm also wondering how you liked Wolverine, but I'm boycotting it after their treatment of the last X-Men movie.
Have a safe trip and please give my love to all my sisters as you see them.

What an experience. I hate those kinds of days.

At least you had that kind of day before the trip and not the day of the trip. Be safe.
