Clip the wing just down to but not including the "quick" but not both wings. That will make them less inclined to fly up that high. Or just let them be outside where they can fly up out of the way of a predator for safety.

I think the only reason the chick got on top of the gate last night was because of how late it was. I put them out when I got home from the farm today, and checked on them a few times. Not once did any of them try to get that high. I'm thinking if I can find something to use for a house for them, I could probably take them out to the farm. I do have something that I could use to divide the area in half, it just wouldn't be that high. (Maybe 3'?) The area the nuggets are in is 10' x 10'. I know they're not going to fly to get in w/these chicks, so it might work.

I was so beat yesterday, I was just barely able to get on at all, let alone do any posting.

LF was down at the farm yesterday. She's the one person that I don't mind helping. She's not acting like I owe her anything, plus she feels pretty much how I do about how to keep the horses. She's been wanting to get her run-in cleaned, but w/her health problems, she hasn't been able to. We got all of the loose stuff out, as well as some of the stuff that was really packed down. Plus, she got some more hay bales in which we unloaded and stacked.

I also got some hay myself and had to load that on my truck. Normally, I've been buying hay at the auction, but decided to get some off of the guy she gets her's off of. The bales were more expensive, but way heavier! I couldn't stack them on my truck the way I normally do. I had tried, only to have them all fall off on the one side. But, at least it was on the farm, and not on the road, so I was able to restack them w/no problem. I did check a couple of times on the way home to be sure they were OK. Got home, they weren't calling for rain, so I decided to leave the hay for overnight.

By the time I got home, I was tired. I was supposed to be going for a motorcycle ride, but wasn't sure I whether or not I'd be going. But, since hubby wasn't home, I decided to go. This was the longest ride we've gone on yet. And, I'm glad that I did. I told hubby where we rode and now he's talking about getting his bike fixed! He would have liked to have gone on that ride. We pretty much rode all the way to the Delaware Bay, then cut back inland. We're be going that way one Saturday soon for dinner on the Bay! Hubby would like to go for that as well.

Anyway, I get home, and I was tired. Hubby still wasn't home and he had told me to call him when I got home. I called, he said he'd be home soon. This was at 9:00. I got a shower, then relaxed. Tried waiting up for him, then finally went to bed around 10:30. I didn't sleep the greatest. Didn't want to get up in the morning, but finally did. It took me forever to unload and stack the hay. I felt really drug out. I don't know if it's because of the lack of rain, or the ragweed we have growing in the area, but my allergies are really flaring. I had to stop because of them. My nose was constantly running, plus my eyes were burning and itching. I really think this is why I feel so tired all the time.

I was finally able to leave for the farm. I didn't really get much done. Got animals fed and watered, eggs collected, poop scooped and my field mowed. Got home, and other than a couple of blueberry muffins, I was too tired to get any lunch. So, I went to sleep. I slept for quite some time and I still feel tired. I don't think I'm going to prayer meeting tonight. I think I'm going to go out and feed animals, bring the chicks in, get some dinner and a shower and go right to bed. Hopefully, I'll feel more rested tomorrow.

Bummer on the allergies. I can SO relate. I found an eye drop that REALLY works, better than the prescription stuff that cost a LOT more. I'll have to get you the name if you want it. I found them at our local organic grocery store, I suspect vitacost.com probably has them too. I gave up my allergy meds 2 years ago now. I was taking 5 prescription meds and it wasn't completely eradicating the problem. I just gave it all up, and suffer some, but am slowly finding relief with various treatments. I'm doing a series of treatments with a woman that does acupuncture as well as other things, and so we'll see how that does eventually. I'm allergic to lots of odd things that don't manifest themselves normally (like cold, wind, and hydrogen proxide...), so hopefully we'll get some of this parred down. Speaking of that, I have to go do my self treatment for the evening.

:hugs

Heat + plus allergies = :sick Stinks too that you have to go around constantly feeling like you barely slept, it always makes everything you do so much more of a chore! :/

I'm feeling a bit better today. It's a vicious circle. There are things I can clean/weed, etc that would help me feel better. But, w/the allergies, there are days when I feel drugged and all I want to do is sleep, so I don't get much done. I'm supposed to be going kaynoeing today, so hopefully, that will help me feel better.

I feel for you, big :hugs and I hope whatever affects you is over soon!

I used to have horrible allergies when we lived on the coast, but I've been much better since we moved out here 15 years ago. I still occasionally run into something that makes my eyes run, my ears itch, and my sinuses unbearable, but it's so much better than before.

Thanks, y'all. My allergies are much better today which is good considering the morning I had.

First off, I knew PT wouldn't be at the farm-she's away. I didn't know if KN would be there or not. LF's gone back home. (She comes for a few days at a time because of how far away she lives and sleeps in her tack shed when she's down.) CL was working, so that meant I had to feed all the horses. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get them all done in the morning or not, but it's really not that hard. In less than an hour, I had everybody's horses fed, the ducks fed, the chickens fed and the eggs gathered. Called KN to let her know and found out she wasn't able to make it today, so it's good I fed.

Once I had them all done, I left to go to the nature center. There was a free canoeing/kayaking "trip" going on, which means we go as far as the back of the lake, let people see the beaver dam and lodge, then go back to the beach. I was going to take some pics, but forgot my camera.

Normally, the head groundskeeper goes out as well, but he's not feeling that great, so he gave me the tow rope. I was hoping I wouldn't need to tow anyone. In fact, w/all the times I've gone out on something like this, there had only ever been 1x when a group needed to be towed and that was 3 young girls. They couldn't quite get the hang of paddling.

When we were ready to head out, there was one group that looked like they might have a problem. Mom, Dad and 3 little girls. Each parent went in one canoe. Mom had 2 of the girls w/her, Dad had 1. Dad was a big guy. The front of the canoe was actually out of the water. They tip. Switch girls around and put the heaviest one in w/Dad. The canoe rode better, but still not the greatest. We take off.

One lady and her daughter were going real slow so I hung back w/them. We finally all got to the back of the lake. I can see where there's been fresh wood put on the lodge. The dam has vegetation growing on it. And, while we're not too happy about the dam, it is kinda interesting to see. We start back and the wind picks up.

For those that have never been in a canoe in the wind, let me assure you, it is no fun! Since the canoe is open, it can be hard to steer into it. Kayaks are easier since they're for the most part covered. I was really hoping that no one would need a tow because I honestly didn't know if I'd be able to do it w/the wind. But the ones having the most problems was the big guy w/his daughter. They could not keep the canoe pointing the correct way and they didn't have enough experience to really battle the wind. My friend, LK, was there in her kayak. She also had a tow rope, so she tied that to the front of the canoe in the hopes that she'd be able to keep them pointing in the right direction. It worked for a little bit, then we got a big gust of wind, blew them sideways so quick that it knocked them off balance and they ended up in the lake! Fortunately, the lake is not deep, but there's quite a bit of muck in the bottom of it. But, there was just no way for them to get back in and make it to the other end. So, LK pulled their canoe. I had Dad put his daughter in the front of my canoe, and he walked in-which wasn't easy because of all the muck.

I felt bad for the daughter. First she was afraid we were going to tip. But, I'm more experienced paddling than her Dad, and when my daughter was that size, I used to ride her in the front all the time, so we had no problem getting in. Rather than go all the way back to where we put in, we only went about halfway up the lake to where there's a boat launch. (She wanted to be on solid ground ASAP!) Then, she was saying it was all her fault, she didn't do a good enough job paddling, etc. By this time, she's in tears, and shivering. I tried to comfort her, let her know that everyone falls in and it was better to fall in in June than in January like I did. LK made it to the boat launch w/the canoe, we beached that, and she went back to get someone to come for the canoe, as well as the rest of the family so they didn't have to walk back. The naturalist, JT, also stopped to be sure they were OK, then she took my keys since I elected to wait w/the 2 wet ones. (She brought my truck to me.) The father assured her it wasn't her fault and reminded her that this was the 2nd time he tipped that day. But, she was still pretty shook up. I just hope this doesn't turn her off to canoeing.

Now I'm home. It's getting hot out, so I think I'm going to do some housework while I feel up to it, then go later to give Stormy his 2nd feeding. Plus, I really gave my shoulder a work out, and want to rest a bit.

The one time I went, I just rode in the middle :D My friend and her Dad were both experienced, so they did the paddling.

Especially with kids in tow, why would people go out when they are inexperienced??? What ever happened to common sense!?!
